Position: Painter | Part-Time NON-EXEMPT position
Department: Facilities and Operations
Reports To: Director of Facilities and Operations

SummaryLouisburg College is a private, residential, two-year with enrollment ranging from 400-500 students.

The Painter performs skilled painting work in the preparation, patching, finishing, and maintenance of interior and exterior surfaces, including wood, plaster, drywall, steel, concrete, and brick. Painting is required on College building structures, walls, and woodwork.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Follow recognized procedures and techniques of the painting trade using brushes, rollers, sprayers, and other equipment as deemed necessary.

  • Ensure proper preparation of surfaces using sandpaper, sanders, steel wool, wire brushes, scrapers, paint removers and chemicals, and related painting tools.

  • Fill nail holes, cracks, joints with putty, plaster, or other fillers, applying paint, stains, varnishes, enamel, or lacquer using the appropriate painting tools.

  • Following a plan for the area to be painted, mix and match pigments, stains or varnishes to the required color, tint, and texture.

  • Assemble scaffolding, materials, and equipment as required by the scope of the work.

  • Practice preventive maintenance and protection of property, tools, and equipment by removing furniture, wall fixures, and equipment from work sites if possible or covering immoveable items with protective cloths, covering floors with cloths or tarpaulins, taping woodwork, facings, and decorative trim.

  • Comply with federal regulations governing environmental protection, hazadous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials common to the painting trade.

  • Restores painted worksites to their original condition at the completion of the work order by removing scaffolding, painting cloths, tarpaulin, and masking tape used during the project, returning furniture and equipment to their proper location, setting up equipment that has been dismantled, and cleaning any paint splatters from surfaces, furniture, or equipment.

  • Assists with documenting the cost of painting work by keeping accurate daily time sheets and work order records of time and materials connected with each project.

  • Practices preventive maintenance of painting tools and equipment by performing spot checks of equipment to determine working order, oiling moving parts, cleaning or servicing tools and equipment as directed by the operator's manual, and returning damaged tools for repair or replacement.

  • Contributes to an accident-free work environment by complying with the operator's instructions for the use of power sprayers and tools; wearing protective equipment such as filter respirators, goggles, hearing protectors, back supports, and work glvoes; reporting incidents of unsafe work activity to supervisors; and following standard safety precautions during work.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS
  • Skilled painting ability that includes the use of small hand and power tools, precision measuring devices, mechanical equipment, and materials common to the painting trade.

  • Must be able to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 75 pounds on an occasional basis.

  • Must be physically capable to endure prolonged standing and frequent bending, stooping, and reaching on a daily basis.

  • This position requires exposure to and the use of chemicals, solvents, and cleaners common to painting work that may be hazardous and cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, use, and disposal/storage are not properly followed.

  • Must be capable of working at heights from ladders, scaffolding, and man-lifts.

  • At least five years successful experience in the painting trade.

  • A high school diploma or the equivalent is required.

  • Completion of painting vocational/technical school or a recognized apprenticeship program in the painting trade is preferred.

  • A valid North Carolina Driver's license.

  • REQUIRED WORK HOURSThe work schedule for this part-time position will be set upon selection of candidate and discussion with Maintenance Supervisor and Director of Facilities and Operations.
