Job Details
The School of Theology of the University of the South, a seminary of the Episcopal Church, invites applications for a tenure-track position in the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible, beginning July 2024. The successful candidate will be an effective teacher and scholar who can equip students with skills to engage critically with the texts of the Old Testament. They will teach two courses per semester in our degree programs, plus an additional course from time to time in either our summer or non-degree programs.
Position DescriptionThe mission of the School of Theology is to prepare clergy and lay leaders for service in the Episcopal Church. In addition to their teaching duties, faculty support the institution’s mission by advising students in their academic and vocational formation, engaging in scholarly research and publication, participating in chapel life, and working collaboratively with the School’s various constituencies. The School of Theology is a residential seminary that offers some online programming; although most coursework will be in-person, candidates should be comfortable with online pedagogy and teaching methods.
The strongest candidates will hold a Ph.D. or Th.D. in Religious Studies or a relevant field with a demonstrated specialization in the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible, but advanced doctoral students (ABD) will be considered. Advanced training in the Hebrew language is expected. Candidates should demonstrate an ability to assess critically the Hebrew Bible documents within their historical, social, and cultural contexts. The candidate should command relevant philological and critical approaches to the text. Ordination in the Episcopal Church is preferred; affinity with the mission and ministry of the Episcopal Church is required.
