Chief of Staff, McIntire School of Commerce

The McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia is seeking applicants for a new Chief of Staff.

Reporting to the Dean, the Chief of Staff provides strategic thought partnership to execute the dean’s vision, including but not limited to creating structure, process and policy; cohesion and alignment; and overseeing the implementation of priorities as needed. The focus of this job is on achieving results that are aligned with the vision and strategic goals of the McIntire School of Commerce . The role will effectively communicate leadership strategy and direction to the broader school community. Initiative, competitive drive, and the ability to stay focused on results are key to achieving the performance objectives of this position.

Because environmental and organizational conditions change rapidly, the work involves innovation and creativity in generating ideas for quick response. Self-assurance, and the confidence to purposely drive toward results while engaging the commitment of others is essential. A leadership style that is firm and goal-oriented, and yet motivates, trains, and engages others in an enthusiastic way is important. The emphasis on building rapport and relationships with individuals and groups requires an outgoing, poised and persuasive communication style. Because the pace of the work is uneven across the academic year, the ability to learn quickly and thoroughly while continually recognizing and adapting to changing conditions is critical.

The scope of the position will require effective partnership with and delegation to proven people. The position requires the ability to work both independently and in coordination with colleagues across multiple deadline-driven projects and the ability to confidently adapt and manage a variety of challenges.

The chief of staff role is one that will evolve over time, providing both growth opportunities and recognition for achieving strategic outcomes and shared goals.

Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in business, accounting, or related discipline and at least 5 years of administrative and supervisory experience. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a graduate degree.

• Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are required.

• Excellent planning and organizational skills and a demonstrated acumen with resource allocation, effective use of technology, and experience working as part of a high performing team.

• Strong analytical and project management skills required, PMP certification preferred

• Results-focused idea generation, innovative and creative problem solving rapport and relationship building focused on achieving result while engaging commitment of others

• Adaptability to shifting priorities through leadership transitions, and alignment with the Dean’s values of service; gratitude; inclusive excellence; and belonging

• Experience handling highly confidential and sensitive information

• Willingness to handle both complex and routine matters

Minimum starting salary of $130,000. Salary will commensurate with experience and education.
