Job Description The University of Missouri’s Research Reactor (MURR) seeks an experienced and knowledgeable Instrument Scientist to aid the Neutron Scattering program.

MURR is the highest-power university research reactor in the United States, operating at 10 megawatts, 6.5 days a week and 52 weeks a year. The MURR facility enables research across many disciplines – From investigating ancient cultures and how plants respond to their environment, to analyzing industrial materials and developing radiopharmaceuticals that have lifesaving clinical applications, the MURR facility is a reliable resource for researchers, scientists, engineers and students across the country.

The Neutron Scattering group at MURR operates four distinct instruments for studying the structure and dynamics of matter. This suite of instruments consists of two powder diffractometers (2XC and PSD), a triple-axis spectrometer (TRIAX), and a neutron reflectometer. The latter two are unique in a university setting in the U.S.

Key duties performed by this position include:

Utilize and develop the neutron scattering techniques at MURR to develop a strong research program. Some key research interest areas are superconductivity, multiferroicity, thermal electric, quantum criticality and battery research .

Contribute to maintenance of neutron scattering instrumentation.

Initiate an independent high quality scientific research that uses the neutron scattering instruments at MURR and seek external funding.

Present results at national conferences and peer-reviewed publications.

Ensure compliance with health and safety guidelines.

Salary Salary commensurate with experience. Salary range: $47,476 - $84,505

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in related/ relevant area and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related field with postdoctoral experience a plus. Strong background in materials research using neutrons and neutron scattering techniques and related data analysis. Good communication skills. Ability to work in a team. Excellent written and oral communication skills A strong record of scientific publication produced using neutron scattering techniques. Proficiency with modern programming environments such as Python, other scripting languages, and/or C/C++.
