Vice President for Student Affairs
Middlebury College seeks an innovative, knowledgeable, and collaborative leader to serve as its next Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA). The VPSA will serve as a key member of President Laurie Patton's leadership team, setting the strategic direction for student affairs at Middlebury's Vermont campus as well as ultimately providing guidance for its affiliated programs and locations around the world. The VPSA will bring a creative, data-informed, and systems approach to several critical College priorities: 1) the collaborative re-envisioning of residential life at Middlebury, 2) ensuring an anti-racist, inclusive, and equitable campus community in which all students can thrive, and 3) further integration of restorative practices into the daily work of the student affairs division. Middlebury is deeply engaged in the process of identifying and dismantling systemic inequities across the institution and the VPSA will be expected to serve as a key collaborator and visible leader in this important work.
Middlebury College is a complex global institution that has grown and evolved significantly since its founding in 1800. Today, Middlebury offers a wide array of students a rigorous and innovative liberal arts experience that connects their academic work with the challenges of our changing world. Middlebury's campuses and programs around the world include: the original undergraduate campus in Vermont which is the heart of the enterprise, Middlebury Language Schools, The Schools Abroad programs, The Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey and the Middlebury Bread Loaf School of English, and the Middlebury School of the Environment.
The Vice President for Student Affairs will be responsible for the strategic vision, personnel management, and fiscal management of the student affairs division, which includes health and wellness and public safety. They will also work closely with their partners and colleagues in the Office of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion, Academic Affairs, Athletics, Enrollment, Advancement, and other areas across the college. While Middlebury's Dean of Students is primarily responsible for day-to-day operations and case management of individual students, the Vice President will focus on removing systemic barriers and building new structures that will enable all of Middlebury's students to thrive.
The ideal candidate will possess an advanced degree and have deep experience with implementing state-of-the-art student affairs strategies and initiatives. They should be experienced in leading an organization through a time of change and committed to anti-racism and to ensuring inclusivity and equity for all community members through both their personal and professional conduct.

Middlebury is one of the country's top liberal arts colleges. It offers its students a broad curriculum embracing the arts, humanities, literature, foreign languages, social sciences, and natural sciences. Middlebury is an institution with a long-standing international focus, a place where education reflects a sense of looking outward, and a realization that the traditional insularity of the United States is something of the past. We seek to bring to Middlebury those who wish not only to learn about themselves and their own traditions, but also to see beyond the bounds of class, culture, region, or nation. Indeed, the central purpose of a Middlebury education is precisely to transcend oneself and one's own concerns. This transcendence may come for some through the study of other cultures; for some through the study of the environment; for others it will come through inquiry into such fields as physics or philosophy, mathematics or music.
Middlebury's undergraduate college is enriched by its other programs. Every summer, the main campus in Vermont is transformed into an institution single-mindedly devoted to the study of nine foreign languages and cultures, and the use of English is virtually banned for the participants, among whom are many Middlebury undergraduates. In the Green Mountains lies Middlebury's Bread Loaf campus, where for six weeks each summer the Bread Loaf School of English is in session. This is followed by the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, which brings together 200 authors and aspiring authors for 11 days of intensive exchange about the art of writing. The Bread Loaf School of English is in session each summer not only in Middlebury but also at Lincoln College, Oxford, in the United Kingdom; at St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico; and at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
There is also an overseas dimension to Middlebury College. The C.V. Starr-Middlebury Schools Abroad are located in Belo Horizonte, Berlin, Bordeaux, Buenos Aires, Concepción, Córdoba, Ferrara, Florence, Getafe, Guadalajara, Hangzhou, Irkutsk, La Serena, Logroño, Madrid, Mainz, Montevideo, Moscow, Niterói, Paris, Poitiers, Santiago, Temuco, Tucumán, Valdivia, Valparaíso, Xalapa, and Yaroslavl. These schools enroll more than 300 undergraduate and graduate students who seek to further their foreign language skills and immerse themselves as fully as possible in the host culture through academic study as well as direct experience.
