Assistant Professor: Bioinformatics

The College of Sciences at San Diego State University (SDSU) seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor to teach and mentor students in the Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics (BMI) program. The successful candidate will use computational analyses or modelling approaches to study biological questions. The candidate must have a PhD in a field within the Sciences related to Bioinformatics research, such as Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Computational Science, Mathematics or Statistics and will be a faculty in one of these respective departments.

The candidate will be expected to mentor Master of Science students in the Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics (BMI) program (http://informatics.sdsu.edu), and the candidate will also be required teach core and elective computational courses in the BMI program (approximately 50% of teaching requirements will be in the BMI program). The other half of the candidates teaching will be in the respective home department, and the candidate will have the opportunity to participate in departmental Doctoral and Master of Science programs. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of research accomplishments, extramural support, and a capacity for mentoring, teaching, and collaboration. SDSU is part of a vibrant research community in San Diego and collaborations within and outside of SDSU are encouraged.

We seek applicants with demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. Candidates must satisfy two or more of the eight Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) criteria: (a) committed to engaging in service with underrepresented populations within the discipline, (b) demonstrated knowledge of barriers for underrepresented students and faculty within the discipline, (c) experience or demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring underrepresented students, (d) experience or demonstrated commitment to integrating understanding of underrepresented populations and communities into research, (e) experience or demonstrated commitment to extending knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic/scholarly success to members of an underrepresented group, (f) in or demonstrated commitment to research that engages underrepresented communities, (g) expertise, experience or demonstrated commitment to developing cross-cultural communication and collaboration, and (h) research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education.
