INTRODUCTION

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Connecticut invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The position has an expected start date of August 23, 2021. The research specialties of interest are in the general area of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV) and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Candidates with a strong background in Innovation and Entrepreneurship will be considered for all ranks and in all Civil and Environmental Engineering related fields.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a vibrant federal-, state- and industry-funded research program and pursue traditional and non-traditional external funding sources. Candidates will be expected to develop and sustain an internationally recognized research program to advance knowledge for addressing fundamental challenges in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) with respect to Transportation and Civil Engineering. The candidate is expected to pursue a creative and innovative multidisciplinary research agenda that benefits owners, operators, decision makers and the traveling public. The candidate should demonstrate the potential to collaborate with current faculty in related areas across the University of Connecticut. The candidate should have research expertise in at least one of the following areas:

Future of Mobility

The concepts of mobility on demand and mobility as a service along with connected and automated vehicles will revolutionize our transportation system. The impacts and mechanics of these technological advances will change the way we travel and introduce significant challenges of safety, sustainability, and equity. These advances include connected vehicles, automated vehicles, autonomous vehicles, automated data collection, remote sensing, and vehicle-to-vehicle communications.

Connected Infrastructure

The integration of sensors and communications devices with civil infrastructure provides unlimited opportunities to enhance the efficiency of design, construction, control, and maintenance of civil and environmental infrastructure. These technologies would include smart traffic signals, smart and connected cities, vehicle-to-infrastructure communications, transportation asset data collection and management practices.

Traveler Behavior Analysis

All movement of people results in an enormous amount of data being collected on an hourly or daily basis. Such data present the opportunity to apply advanced processing methods and applications including AI and ML infused microsimulation-based approaches to model and analyze travel behavior, safety, and efficiency optimizations in real time. This area would lead to AI and ML innovations in research in the areas of activity-based travel behavior, time use analysis, travel demand modeling and forecasting, transportation planning and policy analysis, integrated models of land use and transport, convergence of traveler behavior and safety analysis, and econometric and statistical modeling.

Supply Chain Resiliency

Global logistics have become challenging in the face of disruptions due to government policies and health emergencies. These challenges prompt the need for robust and resilient design and operation of supply chain and logistics networks; mitigation of the impact of uncertainty and disruptions on freight systems; integration of new data sources in understanding freight patterns; sustainable and resilient urban freight systems; impact of new technology such as unmanned aerial vehicles and drones in freight system optimization.

The successful candidate must share a commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, development of innovative courses and mentoring students in research, outreach, and professional development. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their research, teaching, and public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests. Applicants who can collaborate and perform inter-disciplinary work in addition to individual research efforts will be preferred, as well as candidates who demonstrate a commitment to developing and expanding academic and scholarly initiatives of the Department and School of Engineering in the topic of infrastructure systems.

Successful candidates will also be expected to enhance inclusion and broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; as demonstrated through their research, teaching, and/or public engagement, strengthen the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

In addition, candidates in the broader field of civil engineering (i.e., structural engineering, construction management and engineering, resilient infrastructure) whose scholarship and background is well-aligned with entrepreneurship, commercialization, and economic development are particularly encouraged to apply for additional tenure track positions at all ranks. Such candidates, in addition to excellence in their field of expertise, must demonstrate a successful track record as a serial entrepreneur or technology innovator.
