JOB SUMMARY

The Office of the Vice President for Research at the University of Connecticut is seeking an extremely motivated, dynamic, and ambitious individual to manage operations for a new satellite UConn technology incubator based in Stamford, CT as the Operations Manager (Senior Educational Program Administrator). The incubator is focused around data-centric technologies with a concentration in fintech and digital media, and with the fundamental goal of growing employment opportunities in the region and the state. The successful applicant will have relevant experience in the startup world and will be capable of identifying and recruiting promising startups, as well as creating an environment that provides them with the resources, skills, and connections necessary to be successful. Though the role is based in Stamford, it will exist as part of the University’s Technology Incubation Program (TIP) structure which serves all UConn campuses.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Identifying, recruiting, and evaluating data-centric start-up companies in fintech and digital media and helping accelerate their path to commercialization.
• Contributing to (and overseeing) the design of TIP Stamford co-working space, ensuring that companies have the resources needed to commercialize their products.
• Developing a long-term financial model for company leases, as well as managing the leasing process by working with the Director of TIP, the Office of the General Counsel and the State Treasurer’s office.
• Representing and promoting UConn TIP both onsite and in the community, including making presentations about TIP and the University at various internal and external functions.
• Creating and managing vendor/business service provider relationships, including the negotiation of favorable service rates for TIP companies.
• Working with companies on investor pitches, annual update interviews, and generally assisting them in obtaining publicity and funding.
• Coordinating events/programming that support the TIP companies and the greater Stamford entrepreneurial ecosystem more generally, including topic identification and selection/recruitment of presenters.
• Creating and implementing a marketing plan (including social media and networking events) to find new companies, potential investors, business mentors, and to generally publicize the successes of the program.
• Recruiting and managing new sponsorship relationships.
• Collecting, monitoring, and reporting on the various metrics for the TIP Stamford companies (financials, employment, IP, etc).
• Coordinating with TIP Stamford companies and other TIP/UConn staff on their social media and press releases.
• Serving as the point of coordination between the companies, the landlord, and the university for facility/resource issues (e.g., building access, UConn IDs, library credentials, etc.)
Collaborating with other internal and external stakeholders in the startup, entrepreneurship, innovation, and data science realm to establish mutually beneficial partnerships.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Undergraduate degree in an area of relevance to the position and at least five years of experience working in a leadership position in (1) a technology-based environment; (2) a growing technology company; (3) a university technology commercialization program; or some combination of the three.
2. Demonstrated ability to act as an integrated team member, communicating openly with internal and external stakeholders to focus on technology venture opportunities.
3. Demonstrated ability to forge mutually beneficial partnerships with industry, nonprofits, and/or government agencies.
4. Excellent organizational and administrative skills.
5. Willingness and ability to carry out job responsibilities at both the Storrs and Farmington locations (on an occasional basis).
6. Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Undergraduate degree in data science, engineering, or business; MBA.
2. Graduate degree or significant work experience in software, media.
3. Experience leading or investing in successful technology ventures.
4. Experience managing a startup accelerator/incubator or a co-working space.

This is a 2+ year, full-time, grant-funded, durational position with the possibility of extension, subject to performance and the availability of funding.
