Job Summary/Purpose::

Set the strategy for content sharing and ensure timely content sharing is taking place on The Broadside’s website and various social media channels. Expand the audience of The Broadside and position the publication to thrive in the future through effective marketing and promotion of our efforts.

Terms of Employment:
• This is a part-time (<.50 FTE) Temporary Hourly/Non-Benefited position
• Requires flexible work schedule, which may include evenings and/or weekends as well as travel throughout the district when needed.
• Upon hire, must pass criminal and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.

Essential Functions::

1.Post or schedule approximately half of the content for publication on The Broadside’s chosen social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and other platforms as identified.

2.Oversee, along with the News/Opinion Editor, efforts to ensure The Broadside’s website is updated on a daily basis on weekdays, either by posting or scheduling content for publication.

3.Train and mentor other student staff members to share content via The Broadside’s online social media channels.

4.Be the lead digital innovator for The Broadside, exploring new online tools and techniques for storytelling, including new and different social media platforms, emerging trends in digital journalism and online tools for video, graphic design and photography.

5.Perform other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities::

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform these essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.

1.Knowledge of the field of journalism, especially in an online news environment, and familiar with news from various sources.
2.Knowledge of various social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. A curiosity to explore new platforms for potential use by The Broadside.
3.Ability to observe, direct, oversee and train student reporters and photographers.
4.Skill in the operation of modern office equipment, software systems and standard office equipment, internet searches, Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and systems or software unique to the assigned area.
5.Skill in problem-solving, multi-tasking, and time management.
6.Ability to work independently and be a self-starter, while being receptive to guidance and direction from others.
7.Ability to communicate effectively with public, COCC staff, students, third party service providers, and others.
8.Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using English language with or without the use of auxiliary aids or an interpreter.
9.Ability to develop cooperative working relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds and other aspects of human diversity.
10.Willingness and ability to travel to off-site locations and branch campus, as required.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements::

Work hours are determined by the supervisor and vary based on business needs and locations. Position assignments may be assigned an alternate schedule to service the campus needs. Work is performed typically indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to sit or stand at workstation for extended periods. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms. Requires near visual acuity to read written materials, write and read computer screens. Requires sufficient hearing and speech ability, for ordinary telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25lbs. All individuals are required to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications::

1.Currently enrolled at Central Oregon Community College in at least 6 credits and registered for J-215: Publications Lab (1 credit) each quarter while employed with The Broadside.
2.Experience with or training on AP Style as it applies to journalistic writing and publication.
3.Experience with or training on Google Sheets for content planning.
4.Demonstrated knowledge of online tools and platforms including website content management systems.
5.Experience with social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.

Preferred Qualifications::

•Access to reliable transportation to commute for assignments, events or meetings that may take place on or off campus or at campuses in La Pine, Madras or Redmond.
•Current demonstrated experience with AP Style as it applies to journalistic writing and publication.
•Experience with retouch, resize and enhance images as needed using Photoshop or other photography software.
•Back-end website capabilities, such as HTML coding.
•Experience with graphic design.
•Experience with or training on with WordPress content management system.
•Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

Central Oregon Community College, the oldest two-year college in Oregon, provides comprehensive college services to the residents of its 10,000-square-mile district.

COCC offers two-year associate degrees, transfer/lower division programs, career and technical education degrees and certificates, developmental courses, continuing education and community learning classes, industry-specific training programs, and business management assistance.

The College's main campus is located on the western edge of Bend, a city known for its natural beauty and its proximity to diverse recreational opportunities. The location affords spectacular views of the mountains from nearly every point on the 201-acre campus. The Redmond Campus, located 20 miles north on 25 acres near the Redmond Municipal Airport, offers all of the courses necessary to earn an associate degree. Thanks to a successful 2009 bond measure, COCC has constructed campus facilities in Madras and Prineville, opening the two campuses in 2011. In Bend, new health careers and science centers opened in 2012 as well as a technology center in Redmond.
