The Department of Biology at the University of Virginia seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join Dr. Andrés Norambuena’s endeavors to study a novel molecular mechanism regulating mitochondrial function and its potential role in Alzheimer’s disease (EMBO J. 2018;37(22). pii: e100241).

The successful candidate will work in the laboratory which has a NIH-funded research program that mainly focuses in understanding molecular mechanisms disrupted by amyloid beta oligomers and Tau. Our laboratory’s interests are mainly basic but we are also interested in applying our knowledge in future translational activities towards generating novel targets that will help our efforts to combat Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Norambuena’ laboratory has broad interest in Cell signaling & Metabolism, Membrane Trafficking and Disease Mechanisms. We are also working closely with world-class experts in live mouse brain metabolic imaging.

Key Responsibilities for this position include:

1) Participate in planning, designing, and executing technical and complex cell and biochemical research project.

2) Participate in planning and designing complex experiments to evaluate mitochondrial activity in live mouse brain (in collaboration with Dr. Ammasi Periasamy, Director of the Keck Center for Cellular Imaging at UVA)

3) Contribute to data for grant applications and publications.

4) Ability to work in a high-pace environment.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: A Ph.D. degree in Cell/Molecular Biology, Neuroscience or related discipline is required by the appointment start date. The candidate must have effective oral and written communication skills and should have a strong experience with cell culture (primary and cell lines), cell and molecular biology techniques, confocal microscopy. Mouse models and screening technologies are desirable
