Job Details
The Department of Music is seeking a part time Production Support Technician to fill a term position on a 9-month basis. This individual will report to the Production Manager and provide technical support to concerts, rehearsals, recording sessions, and other events presented by the Department of Music and other partnering departments.
This position will work with faculty and students to execute a wide range of events, both student and professional, including but not limited to Princeton University Orchestra, Princeton University Glee Club, Princeton University Jazz Ensembles, the Princeton Sound Kitchen (the Department’s new music series), and student and faculty performances. Production Support will be provided for Effron Music Building, Taplin Auditorium, Woolworth Music Building, as well as other University theaters and venues.
The Department of Music at Princeton provides all students with the opportunity to learn from world renowned composers and musicologists, to take instrumental and vocal lessons in the private studios of top professionals, and to participate in performance courses in chamber music, opera, and vocal ensembles. Students may perform with the Department’s six jazz groups, three choruses, two orchestras, a wind ensemble, a laptop orchestra, a steel drum band, and an African music and dance ensemble. The recent expansion of the Department into the new Lewis Arts complex has provided the opportunity for exciting new musical experiences for our students, and also for the expansion of our production support team.
This is a newly created position and is initially offered on 9 month term with the possibility for renewal and offers a comprehensive benefits package. The Production Support Technician works a varied part time schedule (approx. 33 hours per week) driven by the concert and event schedule of the Department. It is expected that the Production Support Technician is available to work evenings and weekends regularly during the academic year.
Responsibilities
The Production Support Technician provides recurring basic technical and operational support for event rehearsals and productions at the Effron Music Building, Taplin Auditorium and the Woolworth Music Building. Additionally, this position provides periodic event support at Princeton University Chapel, Richardson Auditorium and other venues throughout the University. The basic support provided includes preparation and setup of stage elements, including chairs, stands, platforms, risers, scenery and instruments.
With technical expertise, the Production Support Technician provides all manner of advanced technical support including lighting, audio, video, staging and backline prep. The Production Support Technician is charged to help maintain all Music Department lighting, audio, backline and staging equipment and keep it in optimal working order; this includes maintaining inventories and proper documentation.
The Production Support Technician provides excellent service to students, faculty, staff and external clients. The Technician is expected to attend and participate in regular production meetings. At the direction of the Production Manager, this individual carries out plans for changeovers and work calls; advises as to efficient use of resources and personnel, as well as equipment repair/replace and capital improvements.
Regularly assist with the moving of equipment and instruments to and from various campus locations. The Production Support Technician helps maintain a safe and compliant environment, which meets the OSHA and University requirements for worker, performer, and patron safety. The Production Support Technician ensures that all stage elements are secure and safe.
Qualifications
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- 3-5 years of technical production experience at a performing arts venue or concert hall preferably within a higher education environment
- Highly specialized in at least one aspect of technical production (i.e. lighting, audio, video, or staging)
- Demonstrable working knowledge of all aspects of technical production; Interest in researching current trends and new developments in music and theater technology
- Strong understanding of orchestral, choral and chamber music setups as well as jazz and new music.
- Self-motivated, organized, and detail oriented
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, positive attitude, team player, problem-solving skills
- Ability to work a schedule that includes long hours, varies from week-to-week, and includes frequent nights and weekends
- Experience working with and/or mentoring students
- Valid driver’s license
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Highly proficient and conversant in theatrical lighting systems and electrics. Background with ETC Eos Family control consoles, ETC Net3+ networks, and DMX protocols strongly preferred
- Fluent in live music production using both analog and digital audio systems and familiarity with recording music hardware and software platforms
- Familiarity with database software such as EMS or ArtsVision
- Bachelor’s degree in entertainment technology, music, theater, or related field
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Stand or walk up to 4 hours at one time for 6-8 hours per day;
- Sit for up to 2 hours during an 8 hour day;
- Lift or carry up to 50 pounds frequently (greater than 33% but less than 66% of the workday);
- Lift up to 50 pounds in a range of motions from floor to overhead;
- Push or pull with forces up to 50 pounds occasionally (less than 33% of the workday)
- Constantly use hands for simple grasping, fine manipulation, computer keyboarding (more than 66% of the workday);
- Occasionally bend, squat, kneel, climb stairs, reach or lift overhead, lie down, crawl, knee stand, or push or pull with forces up to 25 pounds (less than 33% of the work day);
- Climb stairs, climb a 6-foot ladder, work on suspended scaffold boatswain’s chair
- Possess ability to full range of body motions, physical agility, and ability to maintain balance.
