21-Aug-2019 Close All Job SummaryThe University of Colorado Boulder is accepting applications for a speechwriter and storyteller. This part-time position (up to 30 hours per week) serves on the Strategic Relations and Communications team. The speechwriter works to advance understanding and appreciation of the mission, priorities and goals of the campus. The speechwriter assists the Assistant Director of Executive Communications in creating communications that support the university’s senior leadership in conveying multiple types of information to diverse constituencies. This is a deadline-oriented position.Who We AreStrategic Relations and Communications facilitates an integrated approach to campus wide marketing and communications to inspire greater CU Boulder engagement, affinity and support. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
  • Editorials 50%
  • Speeches 40%
  • Newslettters 5%
  • Other duties as assigned 5%
  • Percentages may vary depending on job demands.
  • Under deadline, work closely with colleagues on drafts, edits and revisions of talking points and speeches for the campus chancellor and other senior leaders. Conduct appropriate background research to provide context for remarks.
  • Draft editorials.
  • Draft oral, written and visual messaging honed to a wide variety of campus constituents including donors, potential donors, alumni, the campus community and the external community.
  • Communicate consistent campus-wide messaging in collateral including speeches, editorials, web content, talking points, elevator speeches, PowerPoints and letters.
  • Relate complex programmatic goals and research advances in lay terms, storytelling anecdotes and conversational language.
  • Draft, revise and copy edit acknowledgement and congratulatory letters, newsletters and other executive communications to faculty, staff, students, alumni and university partners on behalf of the chancellor, in partnership with colleagues.
  • Coordinate with departments and entities requesting the chancellor’s presence to ensure that executive communications align with requesting entity’s needs while promoting campus priorities.
  • Proofread, produce and ensure quality of outgoing correspondence and other materials.
  • Take primary responsibility for tracking progress of collateral and ensuring that internal and external deadlines are met.
  • Assist in the preparation of slides and other visual materials for executive presentations.

What We Can OfferAnticipated Starting Salary is $45,000, based on 75% time (30 hrs/week).Benefits

  • Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, English, or a related writing-intensive field.
  • Two years of demonstrated experience in speechwriting, newswriting, editorial writing, technical writing or news-feature writing.

  • Ability to think and write strategically while focusing on the goals of the campus and its strategic imperatives to create tomorrow’s leaders, lead in innovation and positively impact humanity.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills that will allow the candidate to interact successfully with all university constituents.
  • Ability to write for the ear and the eye.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • Prefer at least 5 years of demonstrated experience in speechwriting, newswriting, editorial writing, technical writing or news-feature writing.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Experience with writing to different audiences.
  • Experience with developing and executing communications strategy.
