Reference Librarian - Merced Campus

Position:  REFERENCE LIBRARIAN – MERCED CAMPUS

(Successful candidates may be assigned to other locations)  

Salary:     $55,018 – $75,137 (additional compensation for doctorate)

This is a full-time tenure track assignment under the general supervision of the Dean of the Learning Resource Center. The Librarian will be responsible for a full range of professional duties including: providing reference services, collection development in collaboration with discipline faculty, instructing in the use of information technologies, developing instructional materials, working collaboratively with a diverse range of individuals, including possible night and weekend service.

Merced College is a midsized community college located in California’s Central Valley. Founded in 1962, the college serves more than 16,000 students with room to expand on its 267 acre main campus and 120 acre Los Banos site. Merced, incorporated in 1889, offers historical sites, affordable housing, access to the Bay Area and Sacramento, and is the Gateway to Yosemite National Park and the Sierra mountains as well as home to the University of California Merced campus. Our tree-shaded, growing community of just over 80,000 includes multiple biking and walking trails as well as access to several lakes – large and small – throughout the county.

The Learning Resources Center (LRC) is the home of the Merced College Library. The LRC provides research and instructional resources for Merced College students, faculty, staff and administration. Our big bright library is one of the most dynamic and inviting areas on campus with 64+ computers, lots of study rooms, meeting rooms, lots of quiet study space and a dedicated library instruction room. As part of our mission, the Library provides instructional materials and media to support the curriculum of the college and provides for the research and instructional needs of our students in collaboration with discipline faculty. We have an active reference desk and lots of opportunities to be part of the college community. Distance Education is part of the LRC and we are extending our online education including OER and other new instructional technologies. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required: 

• Master’s degree in Library Science, Library and Information Science from an A.L.A. accredited college or university; OR  
• The equivalent.
• Minimum of two (2) years recent professional experience in an academic library, with an emphasis in instruction; OR
• For recent library school graduates, a specialization in library instruction and/or academic librarianship.
• Candidate must have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:  

• Teaching assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times.
• Work with Dual Enrollment and First Year Experience students and programs
• Provide in-person and virtual reference instruction and information service to students, staff, faculty and administration including Dual Enrollment, FYE and Incarcerated students
• Serves as a liaison with faculty in departments outside the library to develop collaborative relationships to further information literacy and increase awareness of library resources to students
• Advocate for and participate in activities relating to OER use
• Prepare, develop and deliver instruction to students, faculty and staff in various modalities (online, in-person, in classroom and at reference desk)
• Prepares online and physical instructional materials appropriate for instructional use may include LibGuides, Handouts, Tutorials
• Develop and assess student learning outcomes for instruction
• Participate in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning
• Participate in collection development for liaison areas and assist in other areas
• Serve on college committees and participate in college-wide projects
• Maintain current knowledge in subject-matter areas
• Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics
• Assignment may include evening hours

Knowledge of:

• Knowledge of current instructional pedagogy involving student engagement through active learning and in conjunction with established student learning outcomes
• Knowledge and/or experience in cataloging and library systems preferred
• Knowledge of copyright, permissions, fair use and appropriate attribution of CC licensed materials
• Knowledge of current research methods including both print and electronic resources
• Knowledge of current trends and technology applications relevant to library services and instruction
• Knowledge of collection development
• Demonstrated knowledge of information literacy best practices in strategies, methodologies, trends and practice within academic libraries

Ability to:

• Develop successful instructional strategies for non-traditional or academically at-risk students
• Work collaboratively with library staff, faculty, and administrators
• Learn new technologies and apply skills quickly

Interview Information: Those applicants deemed most qualified for the position will be invited to appear for oral interviews before a screening committee which includes a 15-minute teaching demonstration on a selected topic.   Finalist interviews with district administrators will follow the same or next day.
