Welcome to the Profile of the "Jewel" of the University System of Georgia, Valdosta State University. Our mission as a Regional University is to provide an educational environment which fosters special concern for the needs of the individual student, while providing the best of instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. We are located in south Georgia near coastal resorts on a Spanish Mission-style campus, nationally recognized for its beauty.
VSU furnishes a unique atmosphere where a broad range of student activities that includes recognized Division II Gulf South Conference athletics and a diverse and comprehensive curriculum in the humanities, education, nursing, sciences, business and the arts gives students the opportunity to prepare for their chosen careers.
Founded in 1906 as South Georgia State Normal College, the school became Georgia State Women's College in 1922. In 1950 the school became coeducational and changed its name to Valdosta State College. On July 1, 1993 it became Valdosta State University. It is located on I-75 in Valdosta, Georgia, a city of 40,000+ population. The 168 acre campus, serves an area stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Alabama state line, containing 31% of the land area of the state. Enrollment has increased steadily and VSU now has a student body of 11,500 representing 48 states and 50 countries. Small classes, at all levels, are taught by 500 well qualified faculty members. VSU offers unique cultural and educational opportunities to business, industry and the public of South Georgia through performances, workshops, institutes, and continuing education programs.
Technologically, VSU is on the cutting edge of development. The campus has a fully operational fiber-optic data network with 24 state-of-the-art student computer labs, all networked to Peachnet and Internet. The Odum Library, through its Galileo workstations, offers on-line network access to infinite source materials beyond its own 1.3 million entries. Distance learning classes enhance the ability of the University to offer classes at multiple sites via the statewide GSAMS network. Throughout the University, students are encouraged to attain technological competence and computer literacy which are vital for achievement today.
VSU offers a unique environment for learning, and I encourage you to browse through our home pages which give you important information about the University and its mission. I hope you will come visit our campus as well and give us the opportunity to personally welcome you.
