Advice on Interviewing
for Faculty Jobs
A series of experts offer tips for what to do -- and not to do -- when you meet with search committees and department chairs.
The University of North Florida was founded in 1972 on Florida’s historic First Coast. Situated 10 miles from the heart of downtown Jacksonville and 10 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, UNF offers our diverse students, faculty and staff the best of both worlds — opportunities for hands-on learning in the 14th largest city in America and the chance to get away from everything (year-round) for a few hours at some of the most beautiful beaches on the eastern seaboard.
UNF resides on 1,381 scenic acres of Northeast Florida’s natural beauty and only about 300 acres of campus are developed. The rest are left to be enjoyed naturally with miles of hiking, biking and walking trails that weave through our beautiful campus. With more than 1,100 faculty and staff, the University of North Florida features small classes and individualized attention for its 16,300 students. The university offers 55 undergraduate programs with 80 areas of concentration, 26 master’s degree programs with 57 areas of concentration. In addition, UNF offers three doctoral programs; two through the Brooks College of Health and one in Education Leadership through the College of Education. We offer a technology-enhanced campus with state-of-the-art facilities to support transformational learning opportunities.
Five colleges offer degree programs in the Arts and Sciences, Business, Computing, Engineering and Construction, Education and the Health Professions. In order to strengthen the core competencies of the University and to further the University’s aspiration to become a regional institution of national quality, the president designated a handful of programs as Flagship Program of academic note. Those programs are Coastal Biology, International Business, Nursing, Nutrition and Dietetics, Music and Transportation and Logistics. All six programs were selected for their academic excellence and scholarly accomplishments of their faculty.
UNF is now showing up in nearly every national college ranking, putting the University at the top of some very impressive lists. UNF even received the prestigious Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement. And while the national recognition is an important benchmark of our quality and value, it is the small class sizes and individualized attention that have become hallmarks of a UNF education.
UNF is committed to offering each student an individualized educational experience made possible by an engaged faculty and dedicated staff. UNF encourages all students to take part in transformational learning opportunities, such as internships, study abroad, off-campus programs and dynamic research projects. Each of our 16,300 students have a chance to take part in a life-changing experience – conducting research with faculty, taking part in community-based learning or studying abroad, which UNF students do at twice the national average.
The 19-sport intercollegiate athletic program is a part of NCAA Division I in the Atlantic Sun Athletic Conference. UNF student athletes are consistently recognized for academic success and community involvement.
UNF, a nationally ranked university located on an environmentally beautiful campus, offers students who are dedicated to enriching the lives of others the opportunity to build their own futures through a well-rounded education.
