This position is a critical function with broad responsibilities to ensure for the safe conduct of research in laboratories at Boston University (BU). The incumbent is part of a team of Research Safety professionals in the EHS Department and has specific oversight responsibilities to develop and conduct safety trainings for personnel working in High and Maximum Containment facilities. In addition, the incumbent has oversight responsibilities for the development, implementation and verification of safety programs in High and Maximum Containment facilities.
Reporting to the Director of Research Safety, the incumbent assists to provide strategic direction and leadership to develop, implement, and oversee the NEIDL High and Maximum Containment safety training programs and the High containment safety programs, through the NEIDL EHS Core.
Some duties include;
-Work with the NEIDL Core Directors and subject-matter-experts to develop and implement comprehensive safety training programs for High and Maximum Containment personnel, support staff and visitors that access the facilities. Training programs range from orientation to mentoring to inspections, emergency drills and exercises and the development and implementation of corrective actions. Develop, identify and maintain processes, resources and tools required to conduct a world-class training program for High and Maximum containment personnel
-Develop, identify and maintain management systems to ensure for the status, accuracy and quality of safety trainings, safety programs and other safety-related processes. Assist faculties and research staff by reviewing their Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for safely conducting work with hazardous or potentially hazardous materials in high and maximum containment facilities.
-Conduct safety audits and verifications of laboratory and animal facilities and review processes involving hazardous or potentially materials. Work with other EHS personnel to provide guidance and recommendations to correct or address findings and observations for continued adherence to regulations and policies.
-Conduct Select Agent inventory checks to verify accuracy of agent inventories and compliance with set inventory security processes.
-Conduct follow up investigations of reported personnel work-related exposures. Determine root-cause and identify necessary steps to correct the incident and prevent or minimize the incident to re-occur. Provide technical assistance and work with compliance and technical committees, as requested, including the Institutional Biosafety Committee, Human Gene Therapy Sub-Committee, Laboratory Safety Committees, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, Radiation Safety Committee and Institutional Review Board on safety related matters
-Respond to emergencies including spills, accidents and exposures.
Must have a Bachelor of Science degree in life sciences, biology, microbiology or other related discipline.
An advance Masters Degree in related field preferred.
At least five years of experience in related field with direct work experience in high and maximum containment facilities reflecting expertise in training programs related to work within BSL3 or BSL4 environments is critical. Knowledgeable of applicable regulations and best practices in laboratory safety at all levels. Demonstrated ability to successfully lead, work and influence others in a matrix management structure. Must be able to successfully complete and successfully pass background checks including criminal background check and FBI/CJIS Security Risk Assessment checks for access to select agents. Must be able to complete and successfully pass the medical clearance requirements for access to High and Maximum containment facilities and use of personal protection including respirators and full-encapsulated positive pressured suits. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with different functional groups across all levels of the organization. Ability to develop and maintain a strong, cross-functional quality team. Ability to objectively evaluate processes and procedures. Thorough knowledge of management systems and accreditation requirements.
