About the position
Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Student Life the Dean of Students will support a dynamic student affairs program that taps the rich potential of a student population that is growing in numbers, academic competence, and expectations for a first-rate education. Expectations for the incumbent include: strengthening current initiatives, and developing and presenting new programs; work closely with Associate Deans to build effective and collaborative relationships that will maximize success in realizing institutional outcomes; continuing the traditions of strong community ties and partnerships; and remaining focused on continuous improvement of the quality of student affairs programs and services. In close collaboration with the Faculty, Academic Affairs, and the entire campus, the Dean will assist in supporting a holistic student learning environment, enriching student campus life, fostering student engagement for both residential and commuter students, building a strong intercultural campus community, and promoting student success. The Dean currently oversees and manages a full-time staff of nine in the areas of New Student Orientation, Judicial Affairs, National Student Exchange, Parent Relations, and Campus Safety.
The successful candidate will have a proven record of success and progressively responsible positions within a strong and comprehensive student affairs program. UNM seeks a new Dean of Students who is a highly respected student-centered professional who can be creative and resourceful in providing strategic direction for the office. The Dean of Students experience will clearly support his/her abilities to create new bridges of collaboration between student affairs and other campus units that are specifically related to student success; experience in an urban institution with a high proportion of students living off campus; clear evidence of success in articulating the vision, goals, and programs of a Student Affairs Division to other campus constituencies to advance the mission of the institution. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to developing an inclusive campus community.
The incumbent must also have a demonstrated commitment to furthering success in providing strong leadership and mentorship for a competent staff. Additional qualifications include a work history that reflects progressively greater levels of responsibility and a broader range of management responsibilities including interdivisional interface. The successful candidate will possess these qualities: a reputation as an effective collaborator, as one who sees connections; flexibility and openness to innovation; a strong value on data-driven decisions; excellence in problem solving and follow through; evidence of leadership at the regional or national level in the area of student/academic affairs collaborations; the ability to establish strong, positive relationships with all members of the campus community through superb oral and written communication skills as well as a reputation as an open and inclusive individual.
Preference will be given to candidates who have earned a doctoral degree, although master’s level candidates with a minimum of five years of experience in progressively more responsible administrative positions will also be considered.
