Clinical Instructor/Clinical Assistant Professor
Responsibilities:The University of Texas at El Paso, College of Health Sciences invites nominations and applications for appointment as Clinical Instructor/Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work from talented individuals who will cultivate excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. This nine-month academic year appointment with the possibility of summer teaching will be made at the Clinical Instructor or Clinical Assistant Professor level (based upon qualifications). The candidate chosen for this position will serve as the BSW Field Education Supervisor and facilitate the placement of students with field agencies, perform liaison duties, and conduct the integrated field seminars. He/she will work closely with the Field Education Coordinator to ensure appropriate and high-quality BSW student placements and compliance with the CSWE accreditation standards for the BSW Program. Anticipated appointment date is Fall 2013.
Qualifications: (1) Master of Social Work degree (PhD preferred); (2) Evidence of or potential for teaching excellence in a higher education institution; (3) At least 1 year of experience in supervising social work students in field education and the potential to deliver a program of field instruction and teaching in a bi-national, bi-cultural environment; (4) Minimum of 5 years of post-master’s practice experience in social work; (5) Texas licensed or license-eligible as an LMSW or LCSW; (6) History of participation in professional organizations; (7) A strong record of community outreach to human service agencies; (8) Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, (9) Record of or potential to engage in scholarly activity; (10) Strong communication, organization, interpersonal, problem-solving, and practice skills; (11) Ability to work with students with special needs based on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); (12) Current knowledge and skill in the use of information and computer technology (e.g., Microsoft Office, e-mail, databases); (13) Ability to work independently and coordinate work with colleagues and peers; (14) History of or potential for service activities in the department, college, university, professional organizations, and the community; (15) Able to travel, as needed, including own local transportation and current driver’s license; and (16) Ability to practice and educate effectively in a bi-cultural, bi-national context.
PhD and Bilingual (English/Spanish) candidates are desirable.
The Department: The department offers the Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work, which began Summer 2010. The Department of Social Work’s BSW Program is accredited, and the MSW Program is in the final stage of Candidacy for Accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education. Final consideration for initial accreditation is scheduled for June 2013. The department has a history of excellence in interdisciplinary research, teaching, and community practice. The BSW Program is the only BSW in the nation to focus on Social Work in a Border Region. The department currently has 115 undergraduate pre-social work majors, 100 enrolled in the BSW Program, and 62 MSW students. The department has seven tenure-track positions, and two full-time clinical faculty including the present position being recruited. The College: The College of Health Sciences provides teaching, research, and service related to the applied health sciences (chs.utep.edu ). It has five departments (Clinical Laboratory Science, Kinesiology, Public Health Sciences, Rehabilitation Sciences, and Social Work), a cooperative Pharmacy program with the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy, and a collaborative relationship with the University of Texas at Houston School of Public Health-El Paso regional campus. Strong collaborative ties also exist with the UTEP School of Nursing, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, and the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso. The College is staffed by over 60 full-time faculty members, serves more than 1900 students, and is nationally recognized for its innovative research in border health, and Hispanic health and health disparities. It has a record of success with NIH and external health research funding. The College was awarded $7.6 million in external funding during the past three years for its innovative health research projects. College faculty conduct research that spans basic and clinical science, from community to global health. The breadth of their research expertise includes health education and promotion, health literacy, chronic and communicable disease prevention and management, maternal-child health, nutrition, exercise science, disability and rehabilitation sciences, and social stigma and mental health. A cadre of graduate students assists faculty in conducting a variety of projects relevant to improving health outcomes in the U.S.-Mexico border region. A recently completed $60 million 138,000 sq. ft. building on the main campus houses state-of-the-art clinical and research laboratories, innovative teaching and clinical simulation spaces, and faculty and administrative offices.

El Paso’s active arts and culture community features the state’s longest running symphony orchestra, a nationally recognized chamber music festival, art galleries, history museums, and a full schedule of seasonal festivals and events. UTEP adds to the arts scene with an award-winning dinner theater, contemporary and student art galleries, and a natural history museum.
