The College of William and Mary seeks an experienced, visionary professional for the position of Dean of Students.
As a senior administrator within the Division of Student Affairs, the Dean of Students plays a central role in realizing the division’s vision: to create an engaging learning environment in which community is strengthened and individuals flourish. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Student Affairs and serving as a member of the Vice President's senior leadership team, the Dean of Students collaborates with the departments across campus to ensure student success and to manage student crises. An advocate for all students, both undergraduate and graduate, the Dean works to promote students’ academic and personal success, to ensure a supportive and inclusive campus environment, to support a strong sense of community and personal integrity among students; and to support student learning both in and outside of the classroom. The Dean of Students provides leadership for several student life program areas including student conduct; services for students with disabilities; parent and family programs; case management; academic support functions, and the Center for Student Diversity. The Dean will provide broad budget oversight for the constituent programs; facilitate strategic planning, assessment, program evaluation, and development efforts for those departments; and coordinate or assist with the assessment of cross-departmental and division-wide student success goals. The Dean of Students serves as a standing member of the Campus Assessment and Intervention Team (CAIT), the Student Affairs Care Team, and the faculty’s Committee on Academic Status (CAS), in addition to representing student affairs on other important university-wide committees. The Dean serves as the Title IX Deputy Compliance Officer for student cases, mediates disability accommodation complaints, coordinates the university response to student psychological/emotional crises, and responds to student conduct appeals. The Dean works closely with other student affairs departments -- the Counseling Center, the Student Health Center, Student Activities, Residence Life, Student Leadership Development, Community Engagement, Campus Recreation, Student Unions, and the Career Center – and serves as the primary student affairs liaison to the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Graduate and Professional schools, and the University Registrar. The Dean of Students directly supervises the Senior Associate Dean/Director of the Center for Student Diversity; Associate Dean/Director Student Conduct; Associate Dean/Director of Parent and Family Programs; Senior Assistant Dean/Case Manager; Assistant Dean (Academic Support); Assistant Dean/Director of Disability Services; and Assistant to the Dean of Students/Transfer Student Support Services. The Office of the Dean of Students includes additional support and graduate student staff.
The successful candidate should have a terminal degree by the time of appointment – preferably in higher education administration, student affairs or a related field – and ten years of increasingly responsible experience in student affairs in higher education; a record of success in working with students; seven years of managing academic and personal crises and student conduct on a college campus; competence in selecting, supervising, and coaching staff; understanding of and commitment to student learning and development and a passion for working with students; demonstrated competence in program planning design, implementation, evaluation and reporting; competence in planning and managing budgets; demonstrated effectiveness in leading a team in collaborative strategic and operational planning and assessment, and in achieving results; and the ability to handle emergencies and to adjust work priorities accordingly.
