Position Summary: The University of North Carolina (UNC-CH) is seeking a dynamic, experienced leader to serve as Deputy Director of its Office of Research Development (ORD). ORD advances the scope and efficacy of University interdisciplinary research as faculty advocate and partner in research planning and development. ORD facilitates the recognition and prestige of Carolina's faculty through the University-nominated grants process and it emphasizes service through research by engaging Carolina's best scholars. The Deputy Director represents the Director on major committees, chairs internal review research committees and meets with faculty, deans, directors and department chair persons regarding strategic planning for research directions; facilitates the development of major interdisciplinary research programs; and has overall responsibility for the pan-university university nominated research grants programs (limited submissions). The Deputy Director also has the primary responsibility of managing day-to-day office operations, including supervising and coordinating staff members and resources to support the mission and goals of the Office. This position reports directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and will work in close collaboration with the Directors of the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, the Office of Federal Affairs, and the Office of Research Communications.

Education Requirements: Relevant Master's degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or professional-level background in sponsored research administration, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 5 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Qualification and Experience: This position requires a high level of planning, leadership, and direction. Candidate must have a strong background in research as well as exceptional organizational, writing and communication skills. The candidate should be visionary and must have administrative and management experience and skill in managing strategic and organizational planning and staff development. Candidate should have knowledge about university research operations as he or she will have direction and oversight of programs related to academic research. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to independently make decisions and conduct tasks in support of the University research mission. The candidate should have superb attention to detail and in-depth problem-solving abilities.
