Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Vice President for Research Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), the largest of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities, invites applications for the position of Vice President for Research. Individuals with demonstrated performance in leadership, strategic planning and management for research and sponsored activities are desired. Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University is one of twelve state-supported universities in Florida. The University is governed by a 13-member Board of Trustees which is governed by the Florida Board of Governors. FAMU is an 1890 land-grant Comprehensive/Doctoral University, which was established by the Legislature in 1887 in the capital city of Tallahassee. The University has a current enrollment of approximately 10,700 students and over 700 faculty members who provide instruction, research and service through 13 colleges and schools. The University has been an historic leader in recruiting National Achievement Scholars and has been number one in the production of African American baccalaureate graduates. In addition to 54 outstanding baccalaureate programs, FAMU offers 29 master’s level programs, three professional programs, including the JD in the College of Law, the Doctor of Public Health and 11 Ph.D. programs. The Vice President for Research will report to the Provost and President of the University and shall serve as the Institutional Representative and Liaison for all research activities and sponsored programs. The Vice President will serve as an active participant on the President’s Leadership Team and will be responsible for supporting the University’s academic mission and programs through the following institutional functions: Sponsored Programs, Contracts and Grants, Technology Transfer, Licensing, Commercialization, Animal Welfare and Research Integrity. The Vice President will lead the formulation and updating of the strategic plans and/or statements of purpose, goals, mission and vision as it relates to research and other sponsored activities and will also be responsible for increasing the number of sponsored research, education and training opportunities for research faculty and students at the University. As the Institutional Representative, the Vice President will facilitate appropriate Technology Transfer from University activities by providing patent protection, promoting commercialization and protecting the intellectual property of the University. The successful candidate for this position will possess: • A Ph.D. in the field of science, technology, engineering or mathematics; • A minimum of ten years of successful and progressive senior leadership in research and sponsored programs in higher education preferred; • Extensive knowledge about university research environments and infrastructure, current trends in technology transfer, patenting and licensing, and current federal and state research compliance regulations, policies and practices. • Extensive knowledge about public and private funding opportunities and trends, national and international research organizations, faculty fellowship programs, institutional partnerships and research collaborations; • A demonstrated commitment to sustainability and an understanding of the current state of sustainable development. • Demonstrated ability to build consensus around a strategic research vision, and implement policies and initiatives to achieve that vision with a commitment to continued development of the University as a research intensive institution; • Ability to communicate effectively to diverse internal and external constituencies, and to collaborate across a wide range of academic disciplines and organizations; • Demonstrated success in leading and mentoring professional staff and cross functional teams; • A successful record of planning, managing budgets and administering grants and/or contracts; • Experience managing data and systems; ability to embrace and utilize emerging technologies.
