Position Summary: The Office of VP for Research invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term IRB Coordinator position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Vice President for Research.

Under the direction of the IRB Administrator, the IRB Coordinator will assist in the management of the privileged and confidential review and approval process of proposed research with human subjects.

The Coordinator performs facilitates the review and approval process for IRB protocols. The Coordinator will use independent judgment in interpreting and applying standard operating procedures, institutional policy, state laws, and federal regulations. The Coordinator will provide assistance to researchers on the preparation of applications and may participate in broader outreach and pedagogical activities on behalf of the IRB.

This position requires a detail-oriented and flexible person who is demonstrably skilled in professional written and verbal communication, and is able to effectively manage rigid deadlines, high volumes, and varied stakeholders. Proficiency with software such as MS Office is required. Some travel may be required. Duties may change as needed to fulfill the mission of the IRB.

Position Duties: 55% - Protocol Review & Risk Analysis:

Advise faculty on issues of ethical research, responsible conduct, and research compliance.
Remain fully cognizant of all current and pending federal regulations and guidelines as they apply to human subject research.
Conduct a preliminary review of the submitted application materials to identify areas of risk to human subjects.
Analyze submissions for completeness, conflicts of interest, and compliance with regulations and local policies.
Work with investigators to minimize risks and resolve areas of concern.
Advise board members of any issues discovered during the preliminary review.
Work with General Counsel and other compliance areas within the Offices of Research Integrity, Sponsored Programs, Technology Transfer, and Environmental Health and Safety to ensure transparency and facilitate appropriate guidance for OSU research community.

20% - Outreach and Education:

Provide initial and continuing instruction to faculty and student investigators regarding the IRB submission process, federal regulations, state law, and Institutional policy.

10% - Committee Support:

Prepare meeting agenda.
Attend IRB meetings.
Take meeting minutes.
Provide regulatory guidance at IRB meetings.

10% - Support the Administrator:

Provide general support as requested. Comply with Standard Operating Procedures and meet expectations of timelines as defined by the Administrator.
If preliminary review of files identified any ethical or compliance issues, note these and bring them to the attention of the Administrator.
Proof and edit IRB correspondence as requested.
Recommend changes and assist in developing new procedures.

4% - File Management:

Maintain electronic and paper filing system; receipt of IRB protocols submissions; assign files to reviewers; prepare and send approval documents; prepare approved consent forms.

Coordinate reviews between investigators and the IRB, including providing basic feedback on submission components; respond to incoming emails, telephone calls and walk-in visits; initiate any required follow-up contact with faculty investigators for copies of paperwork when needed and field inquiries from faculty investigators on status of their protocols during review process; notify Administrator and/or IRB members of timeline issues, if appropriate.

1% - Lead Work and Supervisory Duties:

Assist IRB Administrator in overseeing the work of student employee(s).

Minimum/Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or significant and relevant experience in related fields.

Certification as an IRB Professional is required within 24 months of hire.

Demonstrably skilled in professional verbal and written communication.

Extremely organized with meticulous attention to detail.

Ability to interact professionally and respectfully with individuals from a variety of backgrounds.

Ability to work both independently and as a team member.

Able to deal effectively with high volumes, rigid deadlines, and frequent changes.

Highly proficient with MS Outlook, Word and Excel, with a working knowledge of MS Access.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OAR 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OAR 125-155-0200) as per OAR 576-056-0000 et seq.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications: Prior experience in an IRB office or experience conducting research with human subjects.

Knowledge of federal regulations involving use of human subjects in research Familiarity with research ethics and methods.

Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
