Position Summary: The Department of Mathematics in the College of Science of Oregon State University invites applications for Department Head. The person serving as Department Head will hold both a 9 month, 0.25 FTE tenured full professor faculty position in the mathematics department as well as a 9 month, 0.75 FTE fixed-term administrative position as Department Head (with 1 month additional summer administrative FTE). Reappointment in the administrative position is at the discretion of the Dean. At the conclusion of one's service as Department Head, the faculty member's position reverts to a 1.0 FTE tenured full professor.

The Department Head is responsible for the management and leadership of the department's teaching, research, and service functions. The Head is expected to provide effective academic leadership and to remain active in teaching and research. The Head reports to the Dean of the College of Science and is a part of the College leadership team and serves at the pleasure of the Dean. Specific duties are to oversee budgetary and hiring decisions, communicate vision and message of the Department to the College and University, set policy for Department, authorize proposal submissions for Department, oversee completion of regular reporting required by the Department, foster a supportive environment for Department members (Students, faculty and staff), enhance diversity, engage community stakeholders as appropriate (e.g. newsletter to alumni, meeting with community members and alumni), and help with fundraising for the Department, the College, and the University. The Department of Mathematics has 28 tenured or tenure-track faculty, 3 Postdoctoral Scholars and 27 Instructors. Current research areas include actuarial science and financial mathematics, algebra and number theory, analysis, computational and applied mathematics, geometry, mathematics education, numerical analysis, partial differential equations, probability, topology, and mathematical biology. The graduate program includes 65 graduate students, and there are more than 200 undergraduate majors.

Position Duties: 50% Supervises Department of Mathematics
Oversees the budget, maintenance, long-range development of all new facilities and supervise staff. Directs and coordinates activities of the Department. These activities include overall coordination of all Department initiated research proposals and collaborative research programs, scheduling and coordinating advisory committee meetings and program reviews; assisting current and prospective members in the preparation of various program project proposals; representation of the Department at all internal and external functions requiring or benefiting from Department participation.

Provides leadership in development activities with Foundation and Alumni organizations, with the goal of increasing gifts and benefactors to benefit the Department, College of Science and/or faculty.

15% Maintains scientific collaborations with other scientists within and outside the University, including state, federal, and international agencies.

10% Annually teaches the equivalent of one course at the graduate or undergraduate level.

10% Advises and mentors graduate students and serves on graduate thesis committees within and outside the Department of Mathematics. Validation of advising activity measured by the success rate of graduating advisers in other universities and the professional job market.

5% Participates in curriculum and program development, reviews, and assessments; support personal and professional development of assigned faculty and staff.

5% Communicates technical and non-technical information to resource professional educators, regulators and the public, through direct contact, the news and information media as appropriate. Present public addresses to the community as opportunities arise. Represent University throughout the State and Region.

5% Serve on departmental and university committees.

Working Conditions/Work Schedule:

Minimum/Required Qualifications: PhD in Mathematics or closely related field.

Current Tenured Professor in the College of Science or, research experience, publications record, and scholarship commensurate with a full-tenure appointment at the rank of full Professor to be granted the same rank at Oregon State University.

Proven leader in the Mathematics field, based on publications, research, grant funding, etc.

Demonstrated abilities in teaching and scholarship and the potential for successful academic leadership, based on a record of service to the Department, University, and profession.

A commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications: Some experience in management and/or administrative roles where strong interpersonal skills were necessary.
