Job Description:

Delivers classroom instruction at the HCC Adult Learning Center, an evening community education program providing adult basic education HiSET (high school equivalency and career/college readiness) classes located in downtown Holyoke.  The program seeks to guide learners in identifying career goals and developing college and career readiness skills, leading to employment or placement in a job training or educational program leading to employment.

This position provides reading instruction for ELA level 2 (grade level equivalent 6-8) and ELA level 3 (grade level equivalent 9-12) focused on improving fluency and comprehension, especially of complex non-fiction, and provides writing instruction focused on moving toward mastery of Standard Edited English grammar, mechanics, usage and spelling; and the elements of composition.

DUTIES:

Participates in continuous improvement of reading and writing curricula and teaching strategies. Align reading/writing curriculum with College and Career Readiness Standards and HiSET curriculum. Creates weekly lesson plans aligned with DESE curriculum frameworks. Creates learner-centered classroom environment. Delivers differentiated classroom instruction in a variety of formats including large group, small group, one-on-one and computerized instruction. Incorporates technology and digital literacy into instruction. Integrates tutors into classroom instruction and participates in training and supervision of classroom tutors. Assigns homework weekly for daily completion. Collaborates with Educational and Career Advisor to facilitate student next steps in transition to college and careers. Creates and maintains academic and attendance records. Identifies three professional development goals per year. Attends ABE professional development trainings. Attends weekly HCC/ALC staff meeting and retreats. Meets with supervisor as scheduled. Maintains compliance with DESE and ACLS guidelines. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors degree; at least one year experience in Adult Basic Education, Workforce Development or college instruction; strong written and interpersonal communication and technology skills; excellent organizational skills; commitment to professional and program development; commitment to learner-centered teaching; ability to work effectively and flexibly with a diverse faculty, staff and student body.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Masters degree; trained on MAPT Assessments; proficiency in Spanish or other language than English; familiarity with DESE-funded ABE system, familiarity with Common Core Standards or College and Career Readiness Standards.

COMPENSATION:  $25.95/hr.

STARTING DATE:  September, 2014

HOURS: 10.5 hrs/wk for 36 paid weeks/evening position
