Position Summary: This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Library Technician 2 position for the University Library at Oregon State University (OSU).
The LIBRARY TECHNICIAN 2 uses thorough general knowledge of established library procedures to provide a wide variety of public and technical services in support of an operational unit or section of a university library. Employees in this class may oversee the work of lower level employees, students, and volunteers.
As an area within Oregon State University, The Oregon State University Libraries provides collections and services that support and enhance the University's instructional, research and public services programs. The Libraries include a collection of over 1.7 million volumes and subscriptions to nearly 10,000 periodicals in print and electronic formats.
The purpose of this position is to provide support for the Library Experience and Access Department which includes circulation and course reserves, information and reference service, photocopy, and the learning commons.
Position Duties: 50% The person in this position is responsible for the smooth operation of the Circulation desk and public service areas of the library.
Communication and Teamwork
Communicates effectively, courteously & tactfully, providing accurate information to patrons & coworkers. Responds to and resolves questions, complaints & problems, including fines and lost book questions. Refers to supervisor and coworkers when appropriate. Refers library questions not related to circulation to appropriate service points.
Uses library automated circulation system: creates and updates library patron accounts, checks-in and checks-out library materials, books materials, places traces on lost and missing items, places holds & recalls for library materials, barcodes or creates temporary item records, and makes exceptions to policies as necessary. Keeps up to date with upgrades and changes to the automated library system. Uses ILLiad to check out interlibrary loan materials. Oversees and coordinates the operation of Open Room (room scheduling software).
Provides direction and instruction to student assistants working at the Circulation desk. Informs student managers of student absences and hours needing coverage.
Circulation Desk Responsibilities
Answers, forwards, and responds to messages on the Circulation desk phone. Handles and records cash transactions for copies, locker rentals and library card purchases. Assists library users with copier problems, self-check, study room and locker access or building problems such as security, noise, or alarms. Empties & processes materials return chutes. Performs circulation desk essential duties when regularly scheduled staff are absent. Retrieves and re-shelves course reserve materials. Lends and updates library technology.
Safety and Security
Is familiar with OSU Libraries safety and security policies and procedures. Responds effectively to emergency situations and building issues. Reports safety and security issues or contacts OSU security in case of emergency
Is staff member in charge of the building along with other weekend library staff members. Checks with other library service desks to determine if there are problems or special circumstances which need to be addressed.

Study Room Coordinator
Serves as library study room and research room coordinator. Communicates with staff and supervisor to report issues. Maintains study room use statistics. Maintains study room automated lock system, changing lock codes and replacing study room keys as needed. Works with assistant building manager to coordinate repairs or special cleaning needs for study rooms. Updates room use policies and procedures. Works with library IT department to coordinate smooth function of Open Room, the library's automated room reservation system ? suggesting programming changes, administering hours tables, resolving system discrepancies and patron issues, and informing staff of procedure changes.
In the absence of, or in assistance to the coordinator, performs backup service for tablets, kiosks, ILL borrowing including copyright clearance and basic request processing, and course reserves.
Tablets - processes the holds queue, cleans and inspects equipment, resets default build after each circulation and ensures privacy of patron data.
Reserves ? processes incoming course reserves by creating course and item records, monitors and responds to requests in the reserves email box, assists with the pull-down and return of professors' copies.
Kiosks and LCD monitor ? requests slide development and changes, rotates slides as requested, works with library technology services to resolve issues.
10% LEAD Departmental Expectations
As a member of the Library Experience and Access Department, time will be spent in unit, departmental and library-wide meetings, contributing to discussions and decision-making and working on special projects as assigned. LEAD staff members are expected to demonstrate professional behavior, model good work habits for others, stay on task, maintain an orderly work area, maintain an accurate Outlook calendar and respond to communication in multiple formats within one working day.
Working Conditions/Work Schedule: Work is performed in an office environment. Regular schedule will include day and weekend hours. The person in this position assists other LEAD weekend staff, opening and occasionally closing the building and serves as a weekend student monitor. Regular hours during fall, winter and spring terms are Tuesday through Friday, 7am-4pm and Saturday, 9am-6pm. Hours change during summer and intersession and occasionally due to a need to provide circulation desk staffing to accommodate staff absences.
Minimum/Required Qualifications: 2 years of current library experience (within five years)
Associates degree (or equivalent 72 quarter hours or 48 semester hours), and 1 year of current experience;
An equivalent combination of current library experience, training and/or education in related fields.
AND, proficiency in multiple library specific computer applications, e.g., integrated library systems, database applications, institutional repository; content management systems.
Demonstrated ability to use an integrated Library system including creating Library records. (already system minimum)
Demonstrated ability to provide outstanding customer service in a busy environment.
Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
The incumbent of this position will occasionally be required to lift or carry up to 50 lbs and frequently required to push up to 100 lbs.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OAR 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 24 months.
