Federal Relations Associate
Posting Description: Specific Responsibilities: * Assists the Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Research and Federal Relations (CU-Boulder) in coordinating CU's interactions with Congress, the Administration, federal agencies, research organizations, professional societies, university associations, and public policy organizations on higher education-related issues. * Attends and represents CU at Congressional briefings, hearings, and association and coalition meetings. Prepares memos to summarize the content and potential impact of the topics discussed that may impact campus priorities and activities. * Analyzes legislative and policy proposals with the potential to impact CU. * Drafts concise fact sheets, background materials, "one-pager" position papers, talking points, and high-level correspondence for use by AVPs and university leaders and faculty. * Assists with providing timely and pertinent content for the Office of Government Relations website and social networking sites. * Assists Denver-based Chief of Staff with on-site management of CU's DC office. Coordinates IT and telephone support; mail/shipping/receiving; logistics for in-office meetings; and performs general office duties including ordering supplies and office equipment maintenance, etc. * Serves as the Government Relations on-site liaison to the CU in DC Internship program. * Assists with coordination of and staffs CU events held in Washington, DC. * Supports travel logistics for CU visitors in Washington, DC. * Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree. * At least three years of experience, during the past five years, working in areas related to congressional/federal affairs. * Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills. * Self-starter with good political judgment and strong interpersonal skills. * Team player with strong organizational skills and attention to detail, and the ability to work independently. * Able to multi-task and prioritize work accordingly to meet deadlines while staying on task with daily assignments; willing to take assignments on short notice and travel to the Hill and/or agencies. * Able to successfully negotiate with diplomacy. * Possess advanced computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). * Willing to travel periodically to Colorado.
Required Competencies/Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Desired Qualifications: * A relevant graduate degree or coursework. * Experience with developing or assessing higher education policy and/or scientific research policy and/or health care policy. * Interest in advancing the University of Colorado and Colorado higher education and academic research.
