Position Description Summary:

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the George Washington University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor starting fall semester 2015. Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate is expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, to establish and maintain a strong, externally-funded research program, and to actively engage and contribute to internal and external professional service.


Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or closely related fields and an earned Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering or closely related fields are required, demonstrated expertise in theoretical and computational mechanics with strong evidence of the ability to address complex engineering problems across length and time scales.

Doctoral candidates will be considered, but must complete all the requirements for the doctorate degree by August 1, 2015.


Advertised Salary: Negotiable - Commensurate with experience.

A major private research university situated in one of the nation's rapidly growing research, innovation, and technology centers, GW has an enrollment of approximately 20,000 students, distributed across the main campus in Washington, D.C., two campuses in the metropolitan area, and four off-campus centers.

The School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at GW has been undergoing unprecedented growth in recent years. Within the past four years, more than 30 new faculty members at all ranks have been hired and more will be joining the school and the CEE department this year. A new Science and Engineering Hall is under construction for occupancy in early 2015. This building, which will house most of the SEAS facilities at the main campus in Foggy Bottom, Washington DC, has approximately 400,000 square feet above grade with 290,000 square feet of assignable space for teaching and research laboratories. All GW engineering faculty will enjoy this new and unique state-of-the-art facility at the nation's capital.

The CEE Department fosters a vibrant, multi-cultural, technological community of faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students and has close ties with numerous government and industry research labs and institutes. In addition to a Bachelor of Science program in civil and environmental engineering, the Department offers graduate programs in environmental, geotechnical, structural, transportation, and water resources engineering as well as materials and mechanics leading to MSc and PhD degrees. The CEE department also offers a five-year Bachelor/Master program in civil and environmental engineering.

The CEE Department has several affiliated SEAS centers and institutes, in addition to its own laboratories, both at the main campus and the GW's Virginia Science and Technology Campus (VSTC) in Ashburn, Virginia. Among these are the Earthquake Engineering and Structures Laboratory (including a six DOF shake table), the Center for Intelligent Systems Research (CISR), the National Crash Analysis Center (NCAC), and Traffic and Networks Laboratory at VSTC, all of which have had extended sponsorship from government and industry and benefitted from strong partnerships and collaborations with the cognizant governmental labs.
