Position Summary:
Based in Seattle and reporting to the central ISSI office in Boston, provide a wide range of advising services to international students in non-immigrant visa classifications as they are admitted into various programs of study. Serve in the official federally authorized ISSI capacities of Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO). Review and evaluate forms, requests and related inquiries in order to determine and issue the appropriate Certificate of Eligibility documents for matriculating international students. Respond to admissions-related inquiries from abroad as appropriate, as well as from University Admissions units or other staff from various departments. Observe and execute a precise schedule of SEVIS reportable events and registrations as required by current immigration regulations. Engage in daily immigration advising referring to a range of federal regulations and procedures pertinent to specific nonimmigrant visa classifications. Recommend and approve periods of pre/post-Completion Optional Practical Training, Curricular Practical Training and Academic Training, program extensions and STEM extensions. Follow, guide and advise international students on the resolution of issues regarding maintenance of valid non-immigrant status and retaining eligibility for a variety of benefits during or after completion of academic programs. Support the planning and implementation of orientation programs as they pertain to Immigration Clearance and initial review of F and J regulations with new students. Serve as a resource in committees and working groups for all developments connected to the functionality of SEVIS related systems. Supervise and train support staff student employees.

Qualifications:
This position requires an exceptional level of organizational skills, attention to details, analytical capabilities, and positive problem solving outlook needed in handling cases involving international students in non-immigrant visa classification. Professional manners and style are essential in serving students and interfacing with various departments and offices both within and outside Northeastern. Substantial and continually refreshed knowledge of immigration regulations and SEVIS approved procedural steps are critical in order to help maintain our institution and international students compliant with all relevant federal regulations. High level of interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to properly fulfill supervisory responsibilities and work within established workflow processes. Proficiency in intercultural relations issues and strategies are desirable.

Bachelor’s degree required. A minimum of 3-5 years of formal experience in international educational exchange is required; substantial knowledge and at least one year of practical experience in US Federal regulation governing non-immigrant visa categories and SEVIS is also strongly preferred. Commensurate expertise in international admissions and international student advising is also highly preferable. Extensive cross-cultural experience is essential. Fluency in other languages, experience living abroad is highly desirable. A proven ability to work effectively with students, scholars, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members who represent a broad range of cultural backgrounds and perspectives is important. This position requires strong analytical and organizational skills to be utilized in an office setting that may be quite hectic and fast-paced, thus also necessitating the ability to work well under pressure with confidential material while also effectively handling multiple tasks. Supervisory experience and strong computer skills in major applications are advantageous.
