Position Summary: This position is responsible for a wide range of bioinformatic data analysis and laboratory support in a plant genomics laboratory; the position will both generate and analyze DNA and RNA sequence data and the candidate will work closely with other researchers and computational scientists; projects include: sequence variation analysis in natural and breeding populations, gene expression analysis, gene network identification, genome annotation, comparative genomics, and computational gene characterization and are expected to focus on both natural and agronomic plant species.

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in biology, genomics, genetics, breeding, agronomy, crop science, molecular biology, or related degree; one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic molecular laboratory procedures including sterile technique, RNA and DNA isolation, PCR, and agarose gel electrophoresis; experience in the use of laboratory instrumentation including balance, pH meter, PCR machine, power supplies, and micro-centrifuge; experience in general laboratory practices including safety training, washing and autoclaving of laboratory materials, and preparation of solutions and media; experience with spreadsheet, database and presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Typing Requirements (wpm):

Desired Qualifications: Experience in genomic analyses including DNA alignments, primer design, querying databases and common bioinformatics software (e.g., BLAST, Trinity, Velvet/Oases, Cufflinks, DESeq, EdgeR, Cuffdiff, Tophat, Bowtie, Primer3); demonstrated knowledge of genetic and genomic principles; experience with UNIX/Linux, bioinformatics, scripting; experience in plant care; ability to present project data (verbally and written), contribute to project meetings through presentation of laboratory activities, and read scientific literature pertinent to job; proficiency in documenting laboratory practices, efforts, and activities; competency with common office software including MS Office, Excel, and PowerPoint; demonstration of excellent organizational skills and critical reasoning, critical thinking and assessment skills; ability to work with diverse personnel including supervising undergraduate students; excellent organizational skills; ability to multi-task; and ability to work independently yet contribute to the overall efforts of the team.
