Position Information:
Reporting to the Assistant Vice Provost, the Director of Student Success Programs in the Office of Undergraduate Education (UE) (1) develops and implements educational programs to benefit UC students, (2) leads campus-wide Undergraduate Research programs, (3) contributes to the unit's grant activity, and (4) contributes to UE research and program evaluation.

The Director will collaborate with the colleges' associate deans, student affairs managers, academic advisors, and other campus colleagues to develop high-impact academic experiences and student success initiatives, such as learning communities, upper-division capstones, and academically-enriched internships. The Director will provide leadership and strategic direction for campus-wide Undergraduate Research activities, including the symposium, journal, quarterly grants, Undergraduate Research in the Community (UGRC), and the Chancellor's Research Fellowship. The Director will assist in the identification of appropriate grant opportunities, assist in writing and submitting proposals, and help administer grants that are awarded. The Director will assist in utilizing research and program evaluation to guide decision-making about program development and resource allocation.

The Director will supervise 0.75 FTE Program Coordinator (SAO II) and 1.0 FTE Program Assistant (AA III).
Minimum Requirements:
Master's Degree and five years experience of increasing responsibility in a student success program for an institution in higher education, or equivalent combination of both.

Administrative/Management Experience: Management experience in coordinating activities by determining the time, place and sequence of actions to be taken and providing results; experience in identifying, writing and managing projects; knowledge of applicable policies and procedures, and ability to analyze policy issues and form solid recommendations.

Analytical Thinking: Skill in preparing comprehensive and in-depth analysis of complex, sensitive, and multi-faceted issues, particularly under tight time constraints; skill in observing and evaluating the outcomes of a problem to identify the key issues or redirect effort; skill in evaluating the likely success of an idea in relation to the demands of the situation and determining the long-term outcomes of a change in design or operations.

Communication: Superior communication skills to effectively and professionally communicate using tact and diplomacy with internal and external campus community; demonstrated skill in identifying the correct issues to be communicated, the appropriate audience, the method of communication, and the timing of the communication. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Creativity: Ability to take risks and act as a catalyst for change; skill in generating a number of different approaches to problems; skill in developing a vision or image of how a system/process should operate under ideal circumstances; proven ability to create a supportive and efficient work environment, where new ideas are solicited, evaluated, and implemented.

Problem Solving: Skill in independently researching questions and making appropriate contacts for problem solving, analyzing information, problems, situations, practices, or procedures to identify relevant concerns and patterns or tendencies, and formulate logical and objective conclusions; ability to read and understand complex and/or detailed documents such as proposals, contracts, policies, and procedures.

Self-Management: Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction, setting priorities that accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities; performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another.

Research Methods and Evaluation: Knowledge of research methodology across disciplines; background in social science and scientific research methods. Demonstrates proficiency in developing and managing spreadsheets and databases; strong quantitative skills.

Writing: Demonstrated skill in writing successful proposals and complex evaluation reports. Ability to independently draft complex letters, memos and reports using correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, composition, text editing, and proofreading skills; draft correspondence and comprehensive reports pertaining to the operations, policies, and procedures

Preferred Qualifications:
Coursework in a graduate program at a research-intensive university, with Doctoral degree preferred.
