Working Title: Financial Aid Counselor Job Title Student Services Specialist Job Category: Student Services Position Number: 000239 Summary of Position This position is responsible for the following: Evaluating and approving applications for financial assistance. Advising, counseling, and educating students and parents as it relates to their financial eligibility. Hearing student appeals including Satisfactory Academic Progress appeals, special circumstances appeals and making professional judgment decisions on such appeals. Ensuring the expeditious handling of aid applications in the financial aid counselor's case load and monitor changes in eligibility. Acting as the counselor of the day available for students on a walk-in basis one day per week. Providing presentations to prospective and currently enrolled students as well as event support for various activities including orientation and others. Ensuring decisions made are in accordance with federal, state, and institutional regulations and be accountable for interpretations for changes to the regulations. Limited administrative support is available for this position from the Document Imaging and Operations Support Center as well as the two processing assistants assigned to the counseling unit. Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Graduation from a four-year college or university; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Diplomas and degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of the federal, state and higher education requirements concerning financial aid. Skills must include excellent interpersonal skills, crisis management, and the ability to communicate well. Must have strong attention to detail. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and a strong customer service focus. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office or other comparable office software programs. Preferred Qualifications: Experience managing scholarship programs. Experience managing federal and state programs (such as, PELL, SEOG, Direct Loans, Perkins, need-based, etc.) that assist students with financing their college education. Some experience working with Banner student module or a similar program (to include, but not limited to: financial aid admissions, registrar, academic and/or student accounts). Experience working with diverse student populations. Bi-Lingual with the ability to speak to Spanish. Work Hours 8:00AM-5:00PM Work Days Monday - Friday Hours Per Week: 40 Months Per Year: 12 months New Hire Appointment Status: Permanent Minimum of Salary Range: $27,713 Max.
