Lehigh University seeks an experienced manager and forward-looking leader for the position of Associate Vice President for Human Resources. Among the most selective, highly ranked private research universities in the U.S., Lehigh is firmly rooted in its mission of teaching, research, and service, preparing students to become leaders through outstanding teaching by internationally recognized faculty who engage in groundbreaking research to meet the needs and challenges of society. Situated on more than 2,300 acres on four campuses in Pennsylvania’s scenic Lehigh Valley, Lehigh is one of the largest (by land) private universities in the country. The university enrolls 4,900 undergraduate and 2,100 graduate students; employs more than 440 tenured and tenure-track faculty and 200 adjunct faculty, and nearly 1,215 full and part-time staff; and has more than 75,000 active and engaged alumni. It has an operating budget of $443 million, and with modest debt and little deferred maintenance, is in healthy financial condition.

 

Reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Administration, the Associate Vice President for Human Resources provides leadership for the university in strategic planning and implementation of all aspects of the human resources function. She or he oversees an HR program that integrates the areas of total compensation and rewards, staff recruitment and retention, HR systems, workplace learning and performance, organizational and professional development, employee relations and conflict resolution, benefits planning and administration, and, in close cooperation with the General Counsel’s office, compliance. The Associate Vice President provides advice and counsel to other members of the Finance and Administration team, and to the President, Provost, University Vice Presidents, and Deans on matters pertaining to the management of their direct reports. The Associate Vice President is a member of the Vice President’s Senior Leadership team and oversees a staff of sixteen.

 

The Associate Vice President will have a broad vision for the role of human resources in achieving institutional excellence and a strong track record in building and supporting processes and initiatives that promote talent management. The ideal candidate will possess outstanding management skills; an undergraduate degree (advanced degree in the field of human resources or general management and SPHR or other appropriate professional certification strongly preferred); a minimum of 5-10 years of progressive management experience in a large complex organization serving multiple constituencies; strong technical knowledge of human resource functions and technology, especially in the administration of compensation and benefits programs and employee relations; passion for creating a high performing organization with a strong commitment to service and accountability; excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; a demonstrated commitment and record of promoting diversity and inclusion; and a deep interest in building strong relationships of trust with executive and academic leadership, faculty and staff. The Associate Vice President will be skilled at leading change in a decentralized environment and will possess the management and technical expertise to implement an effective infrastructure that aligns HR programs and services with the University’s strategic goals.
