The purpose of this position is to assist the Office of Campus Recreation in serving the needs of the Vanderbilt community.  This position works specifically with the Outdoor Recreation Center's rental program, the climbing program, and the kayak roll workshops.  This position requires excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as the ability to work with various constituencies in the university community.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Outdoor Recreation Center

 

         Assist in the supervision of the outdoor equipment rental program.

 

         Assist with the interviewing and selection of rental staff and trip coordinators.

 

         Train the rental employees.

 

         Coordinate the annual evaluation of rental employees.

 

         Conduct weekly meetings with the student supervisors.

 

         Staff the Outdoor Recreation Center, as needed, in addition to supervising it.

 

         Be accountable for opening and closing the Outdoor Recreation Center.

 

         Assist with inventory control of all outdoor recreation equipment.

 

         Initiate billing procedures for delinquent customers.

 

Climbing Wall

 

          Hire, train, and schedule the staff at the Recreation & Wellness Center climbing wall.

 

          Be responsible for the daily operations of the Climbing Wall, including safety inspections and equipment   purchase and upkeep.

 

Kayak Workshops

 

         Schedule staff and workshops for the whitewater kayak roll classes in the pool.

 

Adventure Trips

 

         Assist in the overall training of the outdoor recreation staff on Staff Training Weekends (once a semester).

 

          Lead climbing trips and staff training for climbing.

 

         Plan and lead adventure trips.

 

Administrative / Other Programming

 

         Assist in the marketing and promotion of the outdoor recreation program.

 

         Complete the bi-weekly payroll for student employees.

 

         Be responsible for managing an annual budget.

 

         Teach American Red Cross First Aid/Adult CPR courses to the student staff.

 

         Assist in maintaining the Office of Campus Recreation (OCR) vehicles and trailers.

 

         Coordinate the Wilderness First Aid Class each year.

 

         Coordinate the Used Equipment Sale every other fall.

 

         Assist with other projects as requested by the Assistant Director (who is responsible for the    Outdoor Recreation Program).

 

      Coordinate Special Events for the Office of Campus Recreation, utilizing other OCR staff.

 

         Share (on call) responsibility for the operation of the Recreation & Wellness Center.

 

         Participate in periodic evening and weekend supervision of the Recreation & Wellness Center.

 

         Participate in Office of Campus Recreation staff meetings.

 

         Attend professional development conferences and workshops every other year.

 

         Complete other duties, as assigned.




Basic Qualifications

Job requires a Bachelor.

Master's Degree in Outdoor Recreation, Recreation, College Administration or other related field is preferred.

1-3 years' experience in outdoor recreation activities, preferably in leadership

roles strongly preferred.

Intermediate-level or higher skills in climbing required. 

Experience with student leadership or working with students is essential. 

Must possess computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, or similar programs.

 

EXPECTED CERTIFICATIONS (within first 6 months of hire):

 

Vandy Safe driving certification (from Vanderbilt, to drive the vans)

Wilderness First Aid certification

American Red Cross Standard First Aid and Adult CPR

A.R.C. Instructor of Standard First Aid and Adult CPR

Single Pitch Instructor, AMGA or PCIA
