Provide the Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) Finance financial support team with matrix reporting responsibility to the assigned Patient Care Center(s) and the Director of Finance of Hospitals and Clinics.  Work as a part of the Patient Care Center leadership team to create a patient-focused, high performance, high-commitment work team which supports the mission, vision and credo of the VUMC Clinical Enterprise. Maintain the established goals of the Patient Care Center, the Clinical Enterprise and VUMC Finance with an emphasis on the analysis and reporting of financial information.

Key Functions and Expected Performances:

  1. Monitor fiscal performance of the operations and financial reporting quality for the Retail, Specialty, and Contract Managed Pharmacies (RSM).  Conduct monthly review of fiscal performance. Report significant variances to operations leadership and appropriate Finance and executive leadership. Direct effort to maintain integrity of accounting system. Independently evaluate current and new programs through the use, development, or modification of computer financial forecasting models and simulations.

  2. Support operating and capital budget development efforts of assigned areas. Manage the annual operating and capital budget processes. Assist managers with creation of cost center and capital budgets. Develop or critique budget volume projections. Prepare selected budgets and create appropriate roll-ups. Review all budgets for overall expense efficiency. Manage presentation of budgets. Initiate required follow-up efforts.

    4. coordinate annual physical inventory and other inventory activities as needed throughout the year
  3. Provide advice and direction in the development of objective business plans for clinical programs. Responsible for financial sections of the plans. Support the definition and achievement of financial targets. Recommend changes for improvement of financial performance, quality, and customer satisfaction. Present plan to appropriate group(s) for approval. Conduct follow up and monitoring activities.

  4. Provide leadership to the financial support team in developing processes for monitoring quality, customer satisfaction, and financial performance goals against the established benchmarks. Assure that external healthcare trends are assessed and financial benchmarking is reviewed for assigned areas. Work to implement programs to improve efficiency of current operations.
    1. using patient/customer satisfaction data, best practices, and market information to improve the patient care delivery system
    2. using key service dimensions from knowledge of patient/customer expectations and best practices
  5. Work collaboratively with other VUMC Finance staff and operations leadership to ensure accurate and appropriate charge capture and billing. Develop an understanding of the opportunities and risks.
    1. in collaboration with VUMC Finance, Revenue Cycle, Compliance, Contract Management.  Must have working knowledge of Specialty Pharmacy contracts to perform payment validation testwork.
    2. using a comprehensive understanding of healthcare accounting, Federal and state reimbursement regulations and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, appropriate regulations, and University policies and procedures
    3. Responsible for working with Vanderbilt University Information Technology (VUIT) and the Enterprise Data Warehousing (EDW) team within VUIT to maintain tables for identifying and reporting qualifying scripts.  Responsible for periodic review of information in the EDW tables to assure data is supportive of identification of eligible scripts.
    4. Serve as primary contact for regulatory audits of the 340b program as it relates to RSM activities
    5. Work with Pharmacy to maintain accurate facility registrations on the Office of Pharmacy Affairs website
    6. In cooperation with Pharmacy operations team, ensure appropriate relationships between VUMC clinics and pharmacy distribution locations
  6. Duties may include recruitment, training, supervision, and performance review of team members. Support Human Resource efforts of assigned areas. Contribute to the employment process. Assist in the proposal and development of equitable incentive structures.

  7. Serve as a financial resource to other hospital committees. Attend committee meetings as agreed upon with leadership and supervisor. Provide requested financial information with appropriate review of VUMC Finance. Participate in the periodic process improvement reviews of the decision support systems.

  8. May be responsible for the data submission, report distribution, and problem/question resolution for corporate dashboards and/or comparative databases (such as Action OI or CHCA's operations benchmarking).

  9. Support development of standardized automated reports for the Hospitals and Clinics using Hyperion, Business Objects and other reporting platforms to efficiently and effectively communicate operation results.
    1. manage forecast activities on a quarterly or as needed basis
    2. coordinate report development from the Business Objects Universe
    3. ensure budget development and reporting is consistent with Hyperion reporting coordinating periodic reporting of budget iterations through the budget process
    4. assist with preparation of monthly financial results presentations
    5. coordinate monthly reporting of gross sales, contractual adjustments, uncompensated care and cash collections for activity in the RSM financial systems.  In coordination with Revenue Cycle, analyze month-end accounts receivable for collectibiilty

Basic Qualifications

Job requires Bachelor's and 8 years of experience or the equivalent.
