University Relations is responsible for promoting the university to the campus, prospective students and their families, alumni, granting institutions, legislators, the region and the general public. The staff writer is an experienced professional who writes about the people, programs and events that best exemplify the university's highest achievements. Research, report and write thorough, engaging and accurate copy for a variety of university publications and vehicles, including the website, the UMass Lowell Magazine for Alumni and Friends, newsletters, brochures, mailers, reports, postcards, posters, programs and promotional campaigns. Craft messages to specific audiences that tell the UMass Lowell story in a compelling, interesting and engaging way. Produce articles, features and other content that exemplify the achievements of students, faculty and campus leaders and highlight signature university programs. Proactively cultivate a designated "beat" for new story ideas ? acting as an initial point of contact within university relations for the staff, faculty, students and administrators of one or more units of the university. Work with university relations colleagues in social media, web, video, marketing and media relations to brainstorm the best possible ways to tell the university's stories to a wide variety of audiences. Develop and execute communications plans for university initiatives or programs. Work with editors to provide compelling and relevant graphics to illustrate editorial content. Take photographs or coordinate for art with editors, subjects, photographers and videographers. Develop and maintain knowledge of the university's strategic plan, mission and core branding messages.
