Writing Consultant (Part-time) - High Desert Regional Center (827-568)
Writing Consultants meet face-to-face and online with student writers from APU academic programs. Depending upon the program to which the Writing Center is attached, the consultant will meet with students at regional centers or at the Azusa campus. Consultants will act as “informed readers” who give interactive feedback to students on their written projects. Writing Consultants will offer revision suggestions that focus first on global writing issues such as clarity, focus, assignment fulfillment, organization, use of source support materials, and second on sentence-level writing skills, and/or language errors. Writing Consultants will not act as proofreaders. Instead, they will work with writers to help them learn about their own writing style and skills and to provide strategies which will help these writers become stronger in this important skill. Writing Consultants will keep accurate records of the sessions as specified by the WC Director and will assist in refining and updating the APS Consultation service, instructions, and techniques.
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred.
- Some previous experience tutoring or assisting in student learning activities.
- Some experience working with peers in giving writing feedback
- Attend meetings with WC Director and other consultants training in writing consultation and tutoring practices, adult learner methods, and Writing Center procedures and record keeping tasks.
- Read assigned materials and do assigned projects and exercises to learn the distinctives of writing consultation and techniques for working with disabled students, non-native speakers of English, non-traditional students, and other tutoring methods.
- Work with and take instruction from more experienced Writing Consultants to learn consultation techniques and APU’s Writing Center ethos.
- Assist new Writing Consultants in training them in writing consultation techniques and protocols.
- Attend meetings with WC Director and/or with other Writing Consultants.
- Record Keeping
- Fill out session forms as required accurately and thoroughly.
- Maintain records, forms and procedures as designated by the Writing Center Director.
- Enter records online and in other Writing Center electronic records in a prompt, timely manner.
- Resource Development/Maintenance
- Writing Consultants will use standard grammar reference texts or style format reference materials as determined by the course description of the assignment and will model for the student writer how to use the reference materials effectively.
- Research articles and publications on related topics (working with graduate students and/or adult learners, online tutoring techniques, assessment methods, etc.) as designated by Writing Center Director.
- Report to Director and/or to other Writing Consultants regarding research materials and pertinent information learned from research.
- Light clerical work to keep records in order if working at a campus facility.
- Demonstrate initiative in suggesting improvements or revisions in the service as the need becomes evident.
- Public Relations and Communication
- Communicate with programs and departments regarding assignments and writing requirements to which students must adhere in their writing projects.
- Further distribute the Writing Center PR materials to the necessary programs, centers, instructors, and/or students.
- Performs other projects and duties as assigned by the Director.
- Excellent oral speaking skills and excellent writing skills.
- Professional demeanor, but friendly with a sense of humor and some creativity.
- Type 65 wpm with accuracy.
- Proficient use of MS Word, Excel, Gmail, Google.docs.
- Proficient use of online resources, websites, and other electronic informational sites
- Able to communicate effectively and accurately in oral and written form.
- Excellent command of the English language a must.
- Good initiative-taking skills and independent working skills.

- Able to conduct business at other offices on campus and to “run errands” to the various Azusa campuses.
- Ability to lift, pull, grasp, stoop to lower file drawers and reach to top of five-drawer file cabinet.
- Intermittent sitting, standing and walking.

- Ability to lift up to 20 lbs occasionally.
- Driving to regional centers. Must have a California driver’s license.
- Computer monitor, reading, eye-contact with individuals.
