Director, Community Service Center
Job Description: This is an exempt position that falls within the APA union. The Director is responsible for the planning, organization, and operation of the Center for Community Service and Engagement. The Center organizes daily, monthly, and year-long service and engagement opportunities for students, faculty and staff. The Director is responsible for developing and reviewing the goals and mission and all policies and procedures related to the Center. The Director will work closely with faculty to ensure that all service programs have a strong educational component, requiring students to reflect critically both on the world they are serving and on the meaning of their service for their own development. Core Duties: 1. Provide planning, direction, and evaluation in the continued development of the Center's programs and services. Actively promote the mission and goals of the center to the campus and regional communities. 2. Develop and oversee the budget, funding, travel and risk management policies and guidelines for the Center and programs. 3. Coordinate the development of new and on-going programs that promote student learning through volunteer service, service learning, civic engagement, social justice and related initiatives. 4. Work with faculty coordinators for service-learning to provide connections to community partnership sites and explore ways of incorporating service learning into their curriculum. 5. Set target goals for developing new sites and service and engagement opportunities. 6. Establish assessment and evaluation methods and objectives for the department and implement these annually or as needed. 7. Develop and promote partnerships with local and regional community agencies and organizations through contact and site visits. 8. Implement major programs including alternative break trips, service fairs, one-day service programs and the residential service based and social justice learning communities. 9. Develop and maintain an interactive web site that promotes service opportunities and related programs to the campus and local community. 10. Maintain the on-line database of opportunities for BSU students, faculty, staff and agencies. 11. Develop marketing and advertising plans to encourage participation in volunteer service and engagement opportunities and to promote the programs and Center. 12. Work closely with departments across campus to develop group volunteer initiatives for clubs, organizations and student-athletes. Assist students and student leaders in planning and implementing service projects and other community building activities. 13. Establish appropriate advisory committees or groups that can provide input to program development and services. 14. Prepare reports and updates for the Executive Director and University as requested. 15. Identify grants and other initiatives to support the mission of the Center. 16. Attend professional development programs and conferences related to the field. 17. Serve on college committees and assist with college wide events i.e., commencements, honors week, parent/family day, etc. Some weekend and evening commitments are required of this position. Required Qualifications: Master's degree in higher education, counseling, student affairs, social work, public administration or related field. Minimum three to five years full-time experience managing and developing community service and volunteer programs in a college or community setting. Direct experience working with a variety of clients including: faculty, staff, students, alumni, and service providers. Ability to understand and articulate the needs and concerns of ethnically diverse people, underrepresented populations, people with disabilities, women, GLBT populations and others. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with technology including Microsoft Office, Banner, Web Pages and database development. Ability to garner support and enthusiasm for the program among service providers, faculty, staff, students and alumni.
