Founded in the 1876 and located in the heart of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the University of the Arts (UArts) is one of the nation’s only educational institutions offering instruction in all of the art forms, including dance, music, theater, the fine arts and crafts, film and media, design, and creative writing.  It comprises two colleges—Art, Media and Design and Performing Arts—as well as a Division of Liberal Arts. The University enrolls approximately 1900 students, including about 150 graduate students, from 44 states and 31 countries and occupies nearly one million square feet of academic, artistic, administrative, and residential space in ten buildings in the heart of Philadelphia. 110 full-time faculty and some 275 full-time staff are employed at the institution, which has an annual operating budget of $55 million. A new curriculum emphasizing cross-disciplinary exploration, collaboration among artists, and artistic experimentation has been implemented. New programs, including music business, creative writing, advertising design, and more, have been launched. And an innovative new common curriculum that brings students together from across all disciplines is now in place.


The Position

The Vice President for Enrollment and Retention is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the University’s strategic enrollment plan—from application to graduation. The Vice President provides leadership in the development and coordination of recruitment programs, undergraduate and graduate admissions, targeted financial aid, and retention programs as well as providing direction regarding marketing strategy and recruitment materials. In close partnership with academic and administrative colleagues and with broad awareness of current and impending market trends affecting recruitment and enrollment, the Vice President develops fresh and creative approaches to achieve ambitious undergraduate and graduate enrollment goals based on careful analysis of institutional data. The Vice President reports directly to the President and serves as a member of the President’s senior leadership team. The Associate Vice President /Dean of Admissions, Associate Vice President/Director of Student Financial Services, and Associate Vice President/Dean of Students report to the Vice President for Enrollment and Retention. Additionally, the Vice President for Enrollment and Retention oversees approximately 70 staff members and budgets totaling approximately $5.5 million.



A Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s preferred. At least ten years of experience in progressive management roles in admissions, financial aid, and/or marketing in higher education are also required. An understanding of best practices in recruitment and enrollment management, strong data-driven decision making skills, and demonstrated success in an enrollment management role at an institution that is tuition-driven is expected. The Vice President for Enrollment and Retention must be an organized, creative, and energetic hands-on leader who will be expected to analyze complex financial information and statistical data and to have an understanding of net tuition revenue, strategic pricing, discounting, and financial aid leveraging. Evidence of superior oral, written, and presentation skills, as well as the ability to collaborate with numerous internal and external partners, including academic leadership and faculty, will be expected. Proven success recruiting and retaining a diverse student body and belief in the mission and value of the University of the Arts is also expected.
