Iowa State University, one of the nation’s leading land-grant institutions, is seeking nominations and applications for an experienced, dynamic and visionary leader to become the Director of the School of Education. The Director will lead an ambitious, interdisciplinary and growing unit that seeks to be a premier leader in education. Built on a strong foundation in the humanities and social sciences, the school has noted emphases in STEM, literacy, multicultural education, social justice, educational technology, higher education and student affairs, and PreK-20 educational leadership and policy studies. The Director will have a unique opportunity to enhance educational settings across the state and region and lead the School of Education to national and international academic prominence fully integrating the university’s missions of teaching, research, and outreach ( A member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), Iowa State University is also a classified as a Carnegie foundation RU/VH Research University with student enrollment of 33,000 ( It is located in Ames, a community of 60,500, consistently ranked among the ten best places to live and work in the nation ( The 50 faculty in the School of Education advance research and scholarship in teaching and learning theory, and in educational and leadership practice as they prepare professionals to work with diverse populations of learners across the lifespan. The School of Education, within the College of Human Sciences, enrolls more than 1,400 undergraduate and graduate students and houses three research and outreach centers. School of Education personnel collaborate with departments across the university, as well as with state and local education agencies, to prepare educators in more than a dozen licensure areas. Candidates must have a doctoral degree in an appropriate field and distinguished scholarly accomplishments commensurate with appointment as Full Professor in the School of Education and the College of Human Sciences. The University seeks a leader who embraces diversity and who has demonstrated a commitment to helping others reach their full potential and fostering an environment where equity and social justice are valued. Candidates should have a record of successful administrative experience at a university and the ability to build strong partnerships with university students, faculty and staff, as well as with education and community leaders. The Director will have the ability to collaborate with others and to serve as an advocate for the School’s vision for teaching, research, and outreach with internal and external audiences. The School envisions a leader with the expertise to guide organizational development and address the curricular, research and professional issues facing the School as they respond to the changing landscape of education. Experience leading grants, raising funds from external sources and serving as a leader in national or international professional organizations is desired.
