Assistant Professor of ESL/Bilingual Education Concentration (Non-Tenure)

As a result of the increasing demand for ESL and Bilingual Education educators, The National College of Education at National Louis University seeks applicants for a 10-month, renewable non-tenure track position in ESL/Bilingual Education teacher preparation starting in Fall 2014. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver graduate and/or undergraduate teacher preparation coursework in areas of applied linguistics and ESL/bilingual education teacher preparation for the state of Illinois ESL and/or Bilingual Education endorsements. In addition, the candidate will actively participate in programmatic, unit, college, and university initiatives. Teaching locations include NLU’s 5 Chicagoland locations, downtown Chicago, Lisle, North Shore (Skokie), Wheeling, and Elgin; plus online and on-site locations throughout Chicagoland and Northern Illinois. Candidates able to teach primarily at NLU’s Chicago campus and onsite locations in Chicago highly preferred. Teaching assignments include weeknights and Saturdays, as well as blended and online delivery modes. Personal auto transportation is required for most suburban and on-site locations. NLU is one of the largest, most well-established, and most esteemed providers of graduate and undergraduate courses leading to the ESL and Bilingual endorsements in the state of Illinois. Undergraduate and graduate level coursework can be applied to a BA or MAT degree, and graduate level coursework can be used by students who wish to continue on for an MED Degree or Certificate of Advanced Study in Curriculum and Instruction, with a focus on ESL and/or Bilingual Education, or for an MED in Specialized Endorsements, with a focus on ESL and/or Bilingual Education and one additional endorsement area (e.g., reading, special education). Required Qualifications: • Earned doctorate in applied linguistics, second language acquisition, ESL or bilingual education or a closely related field; an endorsement in ESL and/or bilingual education is desirable • Experience working with diverse populations in a preK-12 ESL/BE setting(s) • Experience teaching practicing teachers and/or pre-service teacher candidates • Knowledge of standards-based assessment • Documented ability to integrate technology into teaching is required. Experience with Quality Matters, Desire to Learn (NLU’s online learning platform), and online teaching are highly desirable • Leadership ability and initiative-taking • Commitment to diversity, interest in and/or proficiency in a language other than English and commitment to bilingualism/biliteracy
