Position Summary: Duties and responsibilities of this position include processing and testing specimens from animals and the environment to detect the presence of pathogenic bacteria and fungi; performance of laboratory assays (serologic, biochemical, and molecular) for diagnostic purposes; storing, organizing, and disposal of laboratory specimens; interaction with other laboratory personnel regarding sharing of specimens, workload volume, and clarifying orders; other duties include: performance of quality control procedures as stipulated by the needs of the lab and client; entering and retrieving information from the Laboratory Information Management System for reporting to the client and quality control purposes; operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment; and consultation with other laboratory staff, veterinarians, and clients to provide information and lab results; interaction with a broad array of individuals is expected both inside and outside the laboratory, including safety officials, law enforcement and sales representatives; has responsibility for the safety and health of others and therefore involves strict attention to detail and protocol, exposure to materials containing organisms that are highly pathogenic for animals and humans, and close teamwork with others in the laboratory; continuation of employment may require certification to work with Select Agents which necessitates a federal background check.

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree in microbiology, medical technology, or a related science field; one to three years of related and progressively more expansive work experience in basic laboratory techniques; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; the job may require specialty certifications, approvals, or training; may require successful completion/continued maintenance of accessibility standards.

Typing Requirements (wpm):

Desired Qualifications: M.T. (ASCP) or equivalent certification; experience in diagnostic veterinary microbiology, but recent experience in a hospital or other health care setting will be valued; two years of work experience in clinical bacteriology, anaerobic bacteriology, and mycology; experience identifying unusual or fastidious bacteria; laboratory experience in diagnostic clinical bacteriology including bacterial identification from various sources and susceptibility testing; use of laboratory information systems and computer software; excellent verbal and written communication skills; experience working under biosafety level 3 conditions and experience in laboratory procedures related to culture and identification of environmental and pathogenic Mycobacteria spp.

Summary of Health Risks and Physical Demands (if applicable): Duties associated with this position involve TB risk or working within three feet of patients in an animal health care setting, working with animals or unfixed animal tissue, and wearing a respirator.
