Position Summary: Works on a team with IT and physicists at MSU and the University of Michigan to maintain a best-effort 24/7 analysis facility, MSU Atlas Great Lakes Tier 2 cluster services for US High Energy Physicists in the ATLAS collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider at the laboratory, CERN in Geneva, Switzerland; the MSU cluster consists of 3000 job slots in 175 nodes and 3 PB of storage in 15 file servers and is located in the local Biomedical and Physical Science Building; recommends hardware upgrades and part purchases based on hardware failures, current usage, and usage trends; purchases, installs, and configures new hardware as necessary (file servers, compute nodes, miscellaneous servers); maintains existing 15 file servers and - 75 compute nodes; maintains MSU's vSphere environment (2 hosts), including virtual networking, storage, VM deployment, cross-site backups, and multisite login; maintains Windows 2012 R2 environment that runs the vCenter service; works with the AGLT2 team to identify and diagnose hardware, software, network and communication/connectivity problems and implement solutions- software and services managed include NFS, cfengine3, Rocks clusters, Cobbler, httpd, AFS, CERN/ATLAS specific software, and Squid server; repairs and replaces hardware as necessary; calls services providers for service and warranty replacement parts; identifies and implements improvements to cluster services; documents changes to services and procedures.

Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years of college, technical, vocational or business school such as an associate's degree in computer technology or information systems, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed OR a bachelor's degree in computer technology or information systems, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; experience with installing and removing servers, storage units, etc., for repair and maintenance; and experience using common hand tools; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Typing Requirements (wpm):

Desired Qualifications: Experience in Linux systems; familiarity with Shell and Python scripting; familiarity with virtual systems; ability to work in a team environment remotely; ability to provide best-effort response to downtime.
