Working Title: International Student Advisor

Posting Information: Western Carolina University is seeking qualified applicants for the position of International Student Advisor. Working with international partners. Duties include regular written and verbal communications with prospective international students; promoting positive referrals and promotion of WCU abroad; working with individual departments on campus to integrate international involvement. International student programming, orientation and advising. Duties include week-long orientations for incoming international students at the beginning of each academic semester to assist with their transition to campus and community; working with faculty and staff on proficiency in academic and culture awareness in advising of international students; advising international students and scholars on compliance with federal regulations, applications and procedures regarding F-1 and J-1 visa requirements; monitoring institutional compliance with federal immigration regulations; scheduling workshops to meet international students; working with other campus entities to provide international student transportation to federal and state agencies, or to medical facilities as needed; hiring, training, supervising and evaluating student employees. International event planning. Duties include planning and facilitation of activities for International Festival, International Education Week and other campus-wide international activities. Plan and facilitate international student social and extracurricular activities.

Minimum Training & Experience Requirements: Master's degree in international education, college student personnel, higher education administration, counseling, international studies, or a related field and a minimum of one year work experience in a higher education setting OR a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study and a minimum of three years of work experience in higher education. This position also the ability to read and interpret immigration regulations and to apply them correctly, an understanding of US higher education systems, the ability to successfully interact with a diverse international population, and the ability to supervise student employees. This position requires US Permanent Residence or Citizenship per federal regulations in order to serve as a Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer.

Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of a second language, working knowledge of federal regulations, applications, and procedures for international students and scholars (J-1 and F-1 visas thru INS and SEVIS), and previous work experience as an international education services professional.
