Position Summary:
The Center for Advancing Teaching and Learning Through Research at Northeastern University seeks a learning scientist and educational technologist to serve as Associate Director for Online Educational Technology to support faculty across disciplines in the design and development of online courses. Projects will be carried out in a team-based environment that includes learning scientists, an instructional technologist, and media/academic technology professionals. The Associate Director for Online Educational Technology will: assist faculty in selecting tools and approaches that faculty can implement themselves to yield pedagogically effective results; strategically identify and architect a limited number of pedagogically valuable and more technically complex multimedia elements for outside development; and research and identify existing multimedia content to incorporate into courses.
Primary Responsibilities
• Work closely with Assistant/Associate Directors for Online Course Design to consult with faculty on the design and development of online courses grounded in evidence-based learning principles.
• Suggest technical solutions to meet pedagogical goals.
• Assist faculty in selecting tools to meet their pedagogical needs and level of technical ability.
• Envision more technically complex multimedia course elements.
• Identify and educate faculty and other team members on design decisions that have implications related to browser and platform (including mobile) compatibility.
• Contribute to the creation of media development project schedules.
• Participate in and contribute to the Center’s ongoing programs related to online learning, including workshops, inquiry groups, and research discussions.
• Engage in professional development to stay abreast of technological developments and new tools, and communicate this knowledge to colleagues.

• Master’s degree or above in instructional technology or related field.
• Minimum of three years of experience working on online courses in higher education.
• Experience teaching online in higher education preferred.
• Working knowledge of research-based principles of multimedia learning.
• Ability to guide faculty through design decisions informed by learning science research.
• Proficiency with multimedia authoring tools to produce interactive modules, screencasts, and pencasts– Storyline, Captivate, Presenter, etc.
• Proficiency with tools to enhance online communication and collaboration.
• Knowledge of SCORM standards and integration of SCORM-compliant course components into an LMS.
• Ability to identify and troubleshoot cross-browser and cross-platform issues in multimedia development.
• Ability to extend out-of-the-box functionality of tools through scripting.
• Ability to research, locate and integrate existing media, apps, etc. to enhance pedagogical quality of courses.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty and staff.
• Ability to adapt to changes in priorities and scheduling.
• Ability to initiate tasks with little or no direction.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines, prioritize, and work on multiple projects simultaneously with great efficiency and attention to detail.
