Description

Seeking an experienced paralegal in the Office of the General Counsel to manage third-party subpoenas and to coordinate and schedule Vanderbilt non-party witnesses for depositions and other testimony; to draft petitions for conservatorship for patients of Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) as needed. The paralegal will also assist attorneys with legal research; organize and maintain complex legal files; draft legal documents and reports as needed; search for and track current information on legal issues important to Vanderbilt as identified, such as compliance; and provide general legal and litigation support.

 

The job requires extensive interaction with outside attorneys, law enforcement and other outside agencies, and work with medical information services regarding HIPAA compliant release of medical information. The candidate must possess at least five (5) years of experience preferably with a healthcare law practice and have superior knowledge of HIPAA and other privacy and related laws. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with all levels of employees, clients, third parties, and attorneys; handle high volumes of work in a fast-paced environment; and track and meet deadlines. Experience in working with an academic medical center is a plus.

Key Functions and Expected Performances:

  1. manage third-party subpoenas and witness scheduling
  2. coordinate and schedule Vanderbilt non-party witnesses for depositions and other court-ordered testimony for VUMC physicians and staff
  3.  draft petitions for conservatorship for VUMC patients 
  4. legal research
  5. assist in drafting and reviewing contracts, business associate agreements, and other legal documents for compliance with local, state, and federal laws as well as University policies 
  6. maintain complex legal files
  7. provide general litigation support including preparing discovery responses, court filings, and witness interviews
  8. confer with Privacy Office and Health Information team about privacy and health record issues


      Basic Qualifications


      Job requires Graduate of an accredited discipline specific program and 5 years of experience or the equivalent.
