Southern Vermont College invites nominations and expressions of interest in the position of President.

Southern Vermont College offers a transformative and personalized living and learning experience that provides students an educational home, supporting both access to and success in college. The next President will have the opportunity to build on the momentum generated by President Karen Gross, under whose leadership SVC has revitalized its mission and focused on a high-touch, project-based educational experience. In terms of students and faculty, the College has enjoyed increased enrollment, improved retention, greater diversity, expanded student support services, and faculty growth. Academically, the College has new and expanded healthcare programs, including a fully accredited four-year Radiologic Sciences program and a Baccalaureate Nursing program (including a pre-licensure, four-year BSN track and a RN-BSN track), now in applicant status. The NCAA Division III athletics program is flourishing, with many teams competing in the NECC conference playoffs and supporting full-time head coaches. Finally, the physical plant changes include a new Healthcare Education Center (HEC), new Welcome Center/Office of Admissions building, and renovated classroom and administrative office buildings. Financially, the college has engaged in robust fundraising that has yielded the largest gifts in the College’s history, enabling endowment growth.

The College seeks an energetic leader who will work with the Board of Trustees, Senior Leadership Team, faculty, and staff to articulate academic and strategic directions to advance SVC into its next era. Reporting to the Board and serving as CEO, the next President will share the college’s “deep belief in the potential of every individual” and the commitment to serve SVC’s student population, a majority of whom are first-generation students. SVC proudly nurtures, educates, and graduates its students with engaged learning, personalized support, and career-oriented majors.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated leadership experience, whether in the higher education, not-for-profit, business and/or public sector. This individual must resonate with SVC’s mission and values and must evidence the ability to relate to multiple constituencies, to build consensus, to communicate effectively, and to raise funds and be fiscally rigorous. The President will be an integral part of the Bennington community and serve as the principal spokesperson for the College. Executive experience and teaching experience are valued; an advanced degree is required, a terminal degree preferred.

Southern Vermont College, founded in 1926 as Saint Joseph College and fostered by the Sisters of Saint Joseph, has been independent since 1974. Through its career-launching and liberal arts curricula, combining classroom learning with real-world experiences, SVC endeavors to transform students into engaged citizens with a broad perspective. SVC’s student body of 500 enjoys a 14:1 ratio of students to faculty, an average class size of 17, and a strong educational and social support system. Fifteen majors lead to either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree through five major divisions: business, humanities, nursing, science and technology, and social sciences; in addition, SVC offers an Associate’s degree in liberal arts. In 2011, the College established the Mountaineer Scholars program, a prize-winning initiative that supports college access and success for vulnerable students, almost all of whom are first-generation and/or low income. The 371-acre campus, located in the magnificent Green Mountains, is a mile and a half from downtown Bennington (population 20,000), within 60 minutes of Brattleboro, VT, and Albany, NY, and within a three-hour drive of both Boston and New York City.

Consideration of nominees and candidates will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2015. The Leadership Profile may be obtained at on July 10th. Please forward materials electronically, in confidence, to Ira Wagner, Trustee and Chair, Presidential Search Committee, at
