Position Description

The Department of Health and Human Performance in the School of Education, Health and Human Performance at the College of Charleston seeks a strong and dynamic leader for the position of department chair. We are seeking candidates who hold an earned doctorate in one of the department's disciplines, from a regionally accredited university. Candidates should be eligible for appointment at the associate professor or professor rank with tenure. Rank is negotiable depending on experience and credentials. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching, research and professional development, and service. Administrative/leadership experience, mentoring of faculty and students, understanding of fiscal management in higher education, a record of success in curriculum development, familiarity with external accrediting processes, a record of success in obtaining external support for scholarly activities, and experience working with diverse populations are highly desired qualifications. Experience in programs similar to those in the Department of Health and Human Performance at the College of Charleston is preferred.

Duties include serving as administrative leader, representing departmental and faculty interests within the college, managing and evaluating faculty and administrative staff, overseeing physical and financial resources, maintaining a record of scholarship, and teaching in the area(s) of expertise. Other duties include cultivating research, teaching and collegiality in the department, shaping and assessing the department's academic programs, furthering departmental collaboration with interdisciplinary programs and helping to develop, articulate and execute a compelling strategic vision for the department's future. Typical teaching load is 3 courses per academic year.

The Department of Health and Human Performance offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Physical Education Teacher Education and Public Health to approximately 550 majors. The Athletic Training Education Program is nationally accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) and the Physical Education Teacher Education Program is nationally accredited through the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The Public Health Program intends to seek national accreditation in the near future. The department also offers minor degree programs in health and coaching and a wide range of activity courses that enrich the overall student experience at the College of Charleston.

Located in the heart of historic Charleston, SC, it strives to meet the growing educational demands primarily of the Lowcountry and the state and, secondarily, the Southeast.
