Director, English Language Center
The University of Wyoming (UW) seeks a visionary leader and experienced administrator to direct its newly formed English Language Center (ELC). The Director will hire and lead a team of faculty and staff committed to the education of a vibrant, multilingual, and international student population. The mission of the English Language Center will be to provide intensive instruction in English communication to language learners so they can successfully participate in American institutions of higher education, and to provide support to programs for enrolled University of Wyoming students and community members. The ELC will be committed to the continuous professional development of its faculty and staff and to contributing service and leadership to the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) profession. As Director, the successful candidate will build the English Language Center from the ground up, inaugurating an excellent pre-matriculation intensive English program that meets the needs of the University of Wyoming. S/he will provide daily oversight of all program operations; model and facilitate excellence in program communications; provide an atmosphere that facilitates innovation in programming and development, including partnering with the UW post-matriculation ESL program; cultivate a nurturing academic environment for students; develop and oversee recruitment efforts; hire, train, review and foster professional development of faculty and staff; manage tutoring and supplemental instruction for the Center; work with colleges, departments, and other units including the Ellbogen Center for Teaching and Learning and the Writing Center on programming needs; and represent the UW ELC on campus and within the profession. The Director will be responsible for achieving CEA accreditation. The Director reports to the Office of Academic Affairs. Minimum Required Qualifications: • A Master’s in Teaching English as a Second Language (T.E.S.L.), Applied Linguistics or related field • 5 years’ experience in ESL program administration and university program administration • Record of on-going professional development • Record of effective collaboration • Record of innovation and creative program development • Demonstrated successful program development and program assessment experience • Command of the English language at the level of a native speaker • Outstanding professional, cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills • Demonstrated experience in international student recruitment and support Preferred qualifications: • Terminal degree in appropriate field preferred • 5 years’ teaching experience in an intensive English or academic English preparation program in a college or university setting where English is the language of instruction • Experience in teacher development • Experience teaching ESL/EFL abroad • Proficiency in one or more languages other than English • Experience with CEA accreditation • Successful publication of classroom materials and/or teaching tools • Leadership positions in TESOL International Association, NAFSA, English USA/AAIEP, UCIEP, etc. • Experience in admissions and international student advising • Demonstrated scholarly contributions to the field Salary and Appointment Information This is a full-time twelve-month academic professional position for 2014-15 with potential for renewal.
