Facts, figures, and more information can be found at www.eng.umd.edu. Position Summary/Purpose of Position: The Director of Strategic Research Growth in the A. James Clark School of Engineering will report directly to the Associate Dean for Research. This position will provide research development support to sustain growth in large-scale research programs and to develop and support research partnerships with government, industry and foundations for faculty and the research centers and institutes within the Clark School. Specific activities will include: 1) support growth of the Clark School research enterprise; 2) provide expertise with preparing large, complex proposals; 3) enhance visibility of Clark School research activities; 4) liaison between faculty, national and international corporations and foundations. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 10 years of qualifying experience that includes senior level responsibilities. Qualifying Experience: Applicants should have experience with strategic planning and team facilitation. Applicants should demonstrate an expansive intellectual curiosity, should be detail oriented and should have excellent interpersonal skills. Applicants should also have excellent writing, editing and communication skills. Preferences: Advanced degree preferred: MS with minimum of 7 years of qualifying experience or PhD with minimum of 5 years of qualifying experience. Proposal writing experience. Experience in an academic environment or working with academics. A successful track record in seeking large-scale, interdisciplinary grants. Senior level experience as a congressional staff member, working with or for federal agencies, federal or state legislators and/or in industry, with specific focus on technology and/or policy. Duties include the following: Support growth of the Clark School research enterprise by cultivating future funding and collaboration opportunities. Engage faculty and center directors to initiate collaborations on emerging research areas. Establish and foster relationships with state and federal staffers, program managers and local, national, and international companies to help align the Clark School with specific research needs, opportunities and future directions. Assist with preparing large and complex proposals and facilitate the development of new, multi-year multidisciplinary research proposals and activities, particularly those working across multiple colleges, departments, institutes, government agencies and industry. Assist in development of large proposals, coordinating faculty and center participation and drafting boilerplate sections. These efforts would typically be for proposals at a level of $3M per year or higher. Enhance visibility of Clark School research activities by working with industry to increase awareness of relevant research activities within the Clark School. Give Clark School overview presentations when Associate Dean is unavailable. Coordinate events and create marketing materials, press releases and material for Clark School Research Web Site. Serve as liaison between faculty and corporations and foundations. Engage faculty in research opportunities with industry and foundations by promoting awareness of new federal, state and foundation initiatives (national and international). Identify appropriate faculty for specific opportunities and maintain faculty expertise database.
