Position Summary/Purpose of Position: University of Maryland Energy Research Center (UMERC) is a multidisciplinary initiative dedicated to advancing the frontiers of energy science and technology, with a special focus on forward-looking approaches for alternative energy generation and storage and research areas critical for future energy technology development. UMERC’s mission is to develop energy efficient and environmentally sustainable technologies and practices; educate the public about energy and environmental technologies; inform the larger policy debate on urgent, global issues of sustainable energy and environment; and improve U.S. energy security by developing indigenous and environmentally sustainable energy resources while promoting energy policies that have a positive impact on the environment The incumbent shall coordinate day-to-day communications-related activity for UMERC and assist with faculty relations and proposal development. Their duties shall include but are not limited to: the design and production of Center newsletters; the design and maintenance of website; the design and production of collateral print materials; the writing and editing of news for UMERC web sites and newsletters. Working with Center Director in the development and production of news releases and related interaction with the media. In addition, incumbent will coordinate faculty participation in UMERC, including identifying and disseminating targeted research funding opportunities, team building and proposal development/assembly and drafting boiler plate sections. Incumbent will also assist in the planning of UMERC sponsored special events/summits; and other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required. Experience: At least 3-5 years of related experience preferably in a University, or at federal/state agencies, and/or industry, specific focus on energy technology and policy. Computer experience preparing Power Point and Keynote presentations, creating graphic and text documents, and web page development & maintenance using Drupal-desired. Duties & Responsibilities: Faculty engagement and support – Work with UMERC Director to engage faculty in UMERC activities. Assist in proposal development, draft boilerplate sections, and coordinating faculty participation/meetings. Assist in administration of available faculty incentives such as student fellowships and seed grants. Identify appropriate faculty for specific opportunities and maintain faculty energy expertise database. Marketing and communications – Coordinate the day-to-day UMERC events and create marketing materials, press releases, and web presence. Responsible for UMERC events including annual Sustainable Engineering Workshop and Advisory Board meeting, as well as preparing and manning booth at external events such as ARPA-E Summit and Maryland Clean Energy Summit. Coordinate and publicize Transforming Energy Seminars and UMERC Faculty lunches. Work with UMERC Director and faculty to develop UMERC publications and press releases, as well as targeted marketing materials for each of the UMERC thrusts. Coordinate UMERC communications with campus-wide communications staff. Maintain and update UMERC web site and expand internet presence. Write and/or update content including news events, calendars, and specialty web sites used for the advertising and registration of major Center/Energy events. Engage in analysis of web site traffic and recommend/implement changes based on data. Preferences: Additional Certifications: Additional Information: Additional Qualifications: • Experience with editing and program coordination • Demonstrated ability to speak and write effectively and write clear and concise reports. • Demonstrated ability to carry out assignments without detailed instructions. • Demonstrated ability to reason logically and analyze and solve problems. • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with administrators, faculty, and staff as well as partners outside of the university and to work with people in varying disciplines and populations, internally and externally. • Ability to work effectively independently as well as in a team environment. • Working knowledge of grants and contracts i.e., OMB A-21, A-110, A-133 preferred. • Knowledge of the Institutions Procurement, Personnel Policies & Procedures, preferred. • Candidates should have a thorough knowledge of following software packages: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel,Power Point); Print Software applications such as Photoshop, in Design, Illustrator, and Acrobat. •Working knowledge of web tools and skills such as Dreamweaver, search engine optimization, accessibility and usability, XHTML, CSS, and design of navigation and architecture-preferred. •Strong communication and customer service skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize and multi-task within deadlines in a challenging, fast-paced environment.
